No idea but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn is is some lawn protection fad.
When I was a kid the notion went around the neighborhood that if you put out milk jugs with ammonia (or may bleach or something anyway) on your lawn it would keep neighborhood dogs from peeing on your lawn and causing brown spots.
Of course, it didn’t really work, a gallon milk jug (or several) in your yard is uglier than brown spots, and then you just end up with a brown spot under where the jug sat for weeks.
