Terraria-like games

My daughter and I are playing Terraria again, and I’d forgotten how much I like it. I’ve also played the snot out of Minecraft. Are there other good PC games in this genre–that is, exploration, fighting, building, and crafting?

The game’s not out yet, but Starbound looks to be a game in a similar vein (the lead artist from Terraria went to work on this game).

Thanks, Firagon–that looks great!

I’ve hunted around a little, and I’m not seeing any other games currently available that look like they’re both in this genre and at all good. Does anyone know of any?

Depending upon what kind of learning curve you want to put up with, I enjoy Dwarf Fortress. If you want to try it out, I highly recommend reading the wiki quick start guide and using the Lazy Newb Pack (which comes with a copy of the base game, so download it and not the application-only download), which has some utilities and mods that make the game much more user-friendly. It’s still a chore to learn, but the game’s chock full of amazing details.

Might be obvious and it doesn’t include the crafting/construction part, but you’d probably like the Metroid series of games. Has the elements of 2D platforming, exploration, and combat with tons of item upgrades and secrets to find and new enemies to fight. Not randomly generated, either, but very well designed.

All the 2D games from Super Metroid onward are great (which means Zero Mission & Fusion).
