Well Josh the Newfie won Westminster yesterday (yayy!). The paper said that terriers have won 43 out of the previous 96 BIS titles. There are seven groups of dogs, why do terriers seem to win such a large percentage of BIS at Westminster?
I won’t EVEN touch on the shameful lack of beagles in the BIS
(I don’t know if GQ or IMHO is the best place to ask this. Hopefully somebody with some knowledge of conformation judging can shed some insight…so I’ll try in GQ. If a mod thinks that this belongs in IMHO…that’s OK as well.)
The GQ answer is that Terriers are just better than other dogs.
The IMHO answer is that Terriers just “show” really well. They are big enough to see easily (the way they move and their lines and stuff) but small enough they really move around when they show. They also have a “presence”. Their eyes sparkle and they hold their heads and tails high and come to the ring “on”. They have a lot of personality in a small package which translates to a more “impressive” dog. (Show-wise)
Also, at Westminster, all the dogs are already Champions. They all have pretty much text-book conformation. It comes down to a “personality contest”.
Well see that kind of crazy talk pretty much renders the rest of your post moot.
I am hereby registering my protest at the inclusion of poodles in the Non-Sporting group. The poufy fagele-dogs always seem to win the Group, leaving the Boston Terriers in the dust. (A French Bulldog took fourth this year, go frog-face!)
Of course, when I look at the photos of the dog who represented Boston Terriers in the Group competition and compare him to my Dichess, they seem to be different species…
“Duchess” that is. She’s giving me that look for misspelling her name in public.
