I guess I haven’t been paying close enough attention, though.
Latest episode’s closing scene with Donal lying on his couch playing some blues licks on his guitar, you see somebody (male?) climbing into the attic behind him.
What is that?
Earlier in the episode when his ex brings her intended in for “dinner” some mention is made of noises in the attic and the intended says something like “Yeah, I tried to fix that.”
I’m not quite sure it’s a gag and I don’t believe it has been alluded to before… cinematically, I believe it is a suspensful cliffhanger device. My first inclination/assumption was that it was the newly introduced character of Ray the burglar up to no good. On the other hand, there are also at least two allusions in the last three episodes to Donal’s “alzheimers” or weird things that he doesn’t remember doing. In the latest episode it was finding a box of organized CD’s that he has no memory of ever boxing and organizing, but I don’t remember the other specific allusions from the first two earlier episodes. So maybe he has a mysterious squatter or maybe its his partner playing tricks on him?
Since posting the OP I have been trying to locate any other discussions of the show online. Not much! I surely hope the buzz on it picks up because this is too good a show to slip through the cracks of inattention. Ever since The Tao of Steve I have been impressed with Logue, and the credentials of the creators/producers are top drawer.
Been meaning to catch up on this show On Demand. Question for those watching - does the actor that plays Britt use the same Southern accent he did on True Blood?
The question in the OP has already been answered but I wanted to chime in that I think it’s a great show. I hope that more people do get on board watching it because I am hearing that the ratings are not good, and their ad campaign sucks.
Good ideas all. On Demand (in these parts) has the first two eps and the third is being rerun, so anybody wanting to get caught up can with a little effort. I’m going back through looking for little things like the guy in the attic. There’s so much that’s just thrown away! Guys must be having a blast putting this together.
I’m just a little curious how many others saw this thing and perked up just the way I did. My first thought was, “Hey. This is even better than I had thought before.” Maybe the kick in the gut is what they’re banking on? Subtle, but that’s what an audience teetering on the edge might need to get back into the show’s darker side. Just a thought.
I dunno. I’m watching and will continue to, but it hasn’t fully clicked with me quite yet. I like the two leads and the vet/girlfriend. But so far every episode has had some clunky moments that will pull me out of the show briefly. IMHO the writing hasn’t had the strong consistency of something like Breaking Bad. For example in this last episode I think they wasted Olivia Williams ( who I like ). Something about how her character was written just fell flat for me. She just didn’t seem real or fully believable - almost like the writers were trying too hard.
A couple of firsts for me in this episode – a character said “Smell my finger” and meant it – it wasn’t a joke – and a character used the word “desultory”. I’ve seen it in print but have never heard anyone say it, ever. Not Dennis Miller, not Dick Cavett, and not that dead guy who was on all the talk/news shows and used big words. Who was that guy? Not Gore Vidal, but his opposite number. William F. Buckley! Never even heard him say it.
Any show starring Donal Logue with guest stars Loren Dean and Olivia Williams is worth giving a try in my book. Not all that great so far, but I do like the concept of the two non-PI’s not exactly being ethical.
As to Attic Guy: Since Dean’s character (Jason) talked about the noises in such a way to discourage Hank from checking into it, one might suspect Jason is somehow involved in that. But it is now typical for such shows to deliberately mislead viewers so who knows?
And well, there is also the whole reason behind Hank’s ex and her new fiance visiting for dinner, when the attic noises occurred. Apparently, her new flame is experiencing identity theft, charges/denials to his credit card, etc. … which I just kind of assumed was Hank’s jealous doings from his sheepish reaction, earlier pickpocketing, and noncommittal answer to look into it. Maybe the attic dweller is really the culprit and has been up there since his ex wife lived there? (that dinner scene might be simulataneous foreshadowing callback.)
Do you think they will do a Halloween Terriers?! Seasonal episodes of classic shows are often some of my favorite episodes. Be cool to work this all in to a slow, building, end of October reveal and horror. But, I’m sure the film is long in the can.
