Helter Skelter, Revolution, Paperback writer, Lady Madonna, I’m Down, Oh Darling, Come Together, Birthday, And your bird can sing, Tomorrow Never Knows, Hey Bulldog = Flat and Plain

You don’t see “exertion” in the OP’s clip, especially in the last song?

It’s okay to not like or not appreciate the Beatles, but don’t blame it on being from a later generation. They have plenty of fans from all generations.

How about, “some people from the later generation find Beatles flat, mild, plain although still good musicians especially in their own era”. I mean, aside from Elvis Presley, even country music like Sweet Home Alabama looks more “exerting” & “stretching”. Should Beatles really be classified as rock? It just feels so different from rock.

Meh. You aren’t into the Beatles, regardless of your age. Totally fine.

My kids are 17 and 15, boy and girl, and each would likely list the Beatles as their favorite band. I know a LOT of kids their age who LOVE the Beatles. Their music is very much part of today’s music conversations and shows no sign up letting up.

So if you find them flat or mild, cool. If you are looking to understand The Beatles a bit more, to better understand why they are so respected and loved even, yes, by younger folk, you are welcome to dig a bit. If you are pointing to Sweet Home Alabama and questioning the Beatles’ categorization as “rock,” you would benefit from a bit of digging.

Yeah, I found this video. The Beatles - Rock & Roll Music - YouTube This sounds like rock. Some Beatles songs don’t really sound like rock though. Anyway, now I get why they are classified as rock. This song isn’t so bad to me neither.

By the way, is country music a sub-genre of rock or a separate genre?

Country is its own genre, but there are large overlaps between Rock n’ Roll, Rock, the Blues, Gospel, R&B, Rockabilly and Country and it’s various branches.

If you are asking that question, you are new to American-influenced music. Where are you from and how long have you been listening to music? Have you focused mostly on Today’s music, or have you dug back to the 60’s?

If you are struggling with how to wrap your brain around The Beatles, they are entirely worthy of the time. Really wonderful band. That song you link to, Rock and Rock Music, is really Chuck Berry’s song - the Beatles covered it while they were learning to write their own songs. They covered a lot of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and other 50’s rockers, too. Listen to I Saw Her Standing There for their first original, 50’s style rocker.

I listen to American music, not “American influenced music”. I’m from South Korea, have been living in Canada for 16 years. I’ve been listening to music forever, but I’ve been into 80’s rock music for only about 10 years. I’ve tried 70’s & 60’s, but beyond the 80’s was not really my cup of tea. My favorite is the 80’s.

80’s rock - hair metal? New Wave? Ska/Reggae? Michael Jackson, Prince, Janet, Madonna? Who are your favorite bands?

I used the phrase “American influenced music” because the Beatles are British, nothing more. American blues, jazz, gospel, soul, country, etc. has influenced the globe, but not all of the music coming back over the oceans is fully American in flavor - and that is a good thing.

The Beatles are a rock band; arguably the greatest rock band. If you are looking for up-tempo numbers that illustrate this, their best-known include Day Tripper, Paperback Writer, Helter Skelter and a few others. Since they ultimately left performing to focus on creating albums in the studio, their complex layering of old and new sounds and song approaches blew open the boundaries of rock music. So it doesn’t sound correct to describe them as flat or boring. Their reputation is for being the exact opposite.

I just subscribed so I can watch this tonight.

I think I am into New Wave more. Iron Maiden seems to be my favorite, but I also like Led Zepplin, Stevie Nicks, & etc. I don’t know that many names. I just listen to what I come across. I don’t really seek them out. For instance, if I come across a thread like “80’s rock music” with lots of youtube links, there are lots of names like Duran Duran that I don’t know, but I like all the music in that thread. That’s how I know my favorite is the 80’s rock music.

The bands you mention aren’t New Wave. Iron Maiden = metal, sometimes referred to as New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) Led Zeppelin = formerly thought of as heavy metal, now typically referred to as hard rock. From the late '60’s and 70’s. Stevie Nicks had some solo hits in the 80’s, but is mainly known for being in the third generation of Fleetwood Mac.

Listening to music by dialing in a channel is totally cool. As a next step, you might consider noting who you like, checking their page out on Wikipedia and some of their other songs via Spotify, YouTube, etc…

Nah, I am not that deep into music. lol I just pick up what I get. Usually, if some music from the 80’s (like when they show you “this is from the 80’s”) is on, I love it & I just listen to it. Can’t remember that many names though.

The Beatles always were primarily a rock and roll band, but they were willing to branch out to try different musical forms. That is the source of their greatness – they didn’t want to keep doing the same thing over and over, and were happy to embrace any musical idea. The Beatles ranged from hard rock (“Revolution,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”), ballads (“Yesterday,” “Julia,” “Something”), country (“Act Naturally,” “Don’t Pass Me By”), Broadway (“Till There Was You”), heavy metal (“Helter Skelter”), psychedelia (“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”), children’s Songs (“Yellow Submarine,” “Octopus’s Garden”), Indian music (“Norwegian Wood”), surf music (“Back in the USSR”), concrete music (“Revolution #9” – not a great song, of course, but an experiment in that direction), suites (Abbey Road Medley), classical (“Eleanor Rigby”), and probably several others that don’t come to mind right now.

If you name your favorite group, odds are that they will list the Beatles as an influence.

Do you mean like an AA meeting or something?

Some of these black and white 60s films have been restored for the 1+ collection. It is the 1 collection retweaked to improve stereo on the oldest tracks and 2 DVDs or 1 BlueRay for the video.
Trailer

one late song is a Rock Band animation and one is Yellow Submarine, the rest are real. At least one song is from Let It Be film.

Lennon is a complex guy. He admitted that he couldn’t relate to women well and that he beat his first wife (he even put this in the lyrics of “It’s Getting Better”). If you read his interviews, man, there’s a lot of crap in there. Like 70s-style groovy overly hip but actually not getting it kind of crap. I can also do without about 99% of his solo work, but he made masterpieces with the Beatles. For that, I am grateful.

And yes, the Swedish footage is great. Amazing how primitive the sound systems were back then. Always great to see the Beatles as an actual performing band. I’ve watched a lot of stuff on YouTube.

I read somewhere online (and therefore can’t attest to its accuracy) that Paul is usually pleasant and gracious to fans who approach him when he’s out and about but refuses to sign autographs.

He’s apparently a generous guy too. He came through town a few years ago to play a concert and the waiter who served McCartney and his party at a local restaurant posted afterward that he was shocked at the tip McCartney left, stating that he wouldn’t have to worry about his rent for the next month.

Agreed.

Agreed as well.

Got it. I would be a bit careful then - tossing off the Beatles as plain can get a lot of push back. Same with knowing where Led Zeppelin goes, etc.
