Tesla Cybertruck

Which I think pretty clearly shows the market / customer base for the two vehicles is a disjoint set of people.

I think you’re largely right. That’s a good point. Most people buying Cybertrucks right now aren’t in the market for a truck and chose one over a Ford. They just wanted a Cybertruck. There will be a bump when the cheaper version comes out and after that we’ll see how sales are between the two.

The Israeli Standards Institution just announced that Cybertrucks are not allowed to drive on Israeli roads. Why? Because they’re (supposedly) bulletproof, and armored vehicles require special testing and approval to be considered road legal, a process that can take several years. So maybe some day, but not now

(They’re not actually sold here, of course, but some rich schmuck tried to ship one in, and they wouldn’t let it leave the port).

I’ve seen more Cybertrucks on the road than I have F-150 Lightnings. Or perhaps I should amend that to “I’ve identified more Cybertrucks on the road than I have F-150 Lightnings.” The thing is, the Lightning looks an awful lot like a regular F-150, and while I look for EVs, I generally ignore anything that looks like an F-150. In any case, I’ve only seen a handful of either.

Here in the land of the pickup truck, I’ve seen one F-150 Lightning in real life, zero Cybertrucks.

However, one co-worker did drive their Cybertruck into the office on a day I worked from home. Another co-worker took a pic and was ragging on its looks in one of the company chat rooms. Even though I don’t like how it looks, since the owner of it might be in the room, I thought that was bad taste.

Cybertrucks aren’t quite daily sightings here, but it’s close. I had to wait for one to go by today. Other than at a Tesla dealership I have yet to see two of them in the wild simultaneously. But that day is coming too.

I’m thinking 1/3 to 40% are wrapped, the rest are plain stainless. The one I saw today was a semi-gloss finish in dark gray bordering on black.

I find it interesting that I’ve never seen a Cybertruck on the road, but I’ve seen two Rivians. And that was yesterday when I’d found out (here) the day before what a Rivian looks like. I’ve likely seen more Rivians, but didn’t know it. I’d certainly know if I’d seen a Cybertruck.

As I have said many times, Tesla cars are insanely common out here in Santa Barbara. You can’t go a minute or two driving around without seeing one. There are a lot of Rivians too. There are relatively common. I have only seen two Cybertrucks which may have been the same one two times. My sister lives in a fancy area of Los Angeles. I was driving around there last month and saw at least five or six of them in one day.

My GF drives a white Tesla Model Y. I drive a non-white non-tesla.

The other day I was driving my car with her riding with me. This was on a main avenue with 2 lanes each way and a median island. Sitting at a light I noticed we had a white Tesla Model S in front of us, a white Tesla Model Y alongside us, and a white Tesla Model Y behind us. I told her I was feeling surrounded and outnumbered. She laughed.

It does seem like easily 2/3rds of the Tesla cars around here are white. To the point that I almost double-take when I see a Tesla in non-white. That shape and those other colors don’t quite register as normal.

Oh, I’ve seen a ton of Tesla sedans. Several of my neighbors have one. I live on the Westside, and I’ve not seen one Cybertruck.

I think I’ve only seen white or blackish. Do they even come in colors with color?

Here in the Chicago area, I’ve so far only seen one Cybertruck and I think two Rivians. I’m curious where they all are!

Oh, I suppose I forgot to mention I have seen a couple of Rivians. I may have seen more Lightnings as well, but you have to really look to notice them.

Lately I’m seeing some pretty cool colored Teslas. Some are a matt finish. But, by far the majority are one of the following: white, black, grey or red. Grey seems most common around here, and black the least.

Tesla occasionally varies which color is “free” (other colors cost +$1-2k for the Model 3/Y). Currently it’s grey, but it’s been white in the past. Which color is most common probably depends on the average age of the local fleet.

Stealth grey thank you very much.

Vs. Pearl White Multi-coat

Well, it could be a lot worse. The Bugatti Veyron once came in Rape Yellow:

Update: Tesla changed the policy and allowed him to resell the vehicle.

I saw fields and fields of rape when I was in England.

In eastern Germany they seemed to go on forever, and when the sun was on them it was so brightly yellow it hurt the eyes.

Yes! I remember them being super bright, too.
