Tesla Cybertruck

Seen a couple around here the past couple days - 1 white, the other black. Boy, they sure don’t look better with familiarity!

That is one historically ugly truck.

Considering Captain Slow’s choice of road trip vehicles over the years, I don’t think I’d go for any vehicle based on his recommendation.

Eh, the things James May points out aren’t exactly ringing endorsements of the Cybertruck.

He points out some of the same things we have, both to the benefit (they can be technologically and mechanically sound electric vehicles [YMMV], the visual appeal to guys of a certain age based on it’s angular appearance) and some to it’s detriment (build quality issues, visibility issues, too big, too brash) and says while he likes it’s chutzpah (I’m paraphrasing) it’s far too much for him to buy one at it’s current size, although he’d consider a mini model.

But it’s true, he didn’t reject it because of it’s appearance.

ETA - and while not perfect, his choices over the years, and his focus on mending them, rather than being silly, has put him in a better place most of the time on his road trips… with a few major exceptions of course!

That was my reaction, too.

Here’s something I found on Facebook, with the caption, “Cybertruck after a winter in Glasgow.” I’m unsure whether the image will disappear after X amount of time, which happened to another photo i posted.

I just found it interesting that he is not exactly what I’d think of as the main demographic of people who like it for its chutzpah. Too big, too little visibility–sure, but that’s true of all large pickups. Most are worse, really. A danger to pedestrians? Maybe, but the typical modern pickup can drive over a ten-year-old without the driver even seeing them. Sharp edges are the least of their worries.

Pardon my snipping the first half, but I’ll quote myself from upthread:

James May is 61, so only a year outside of the bracket above, and it looks like his attitude matches my (quite wide granted) generalization.

As for the second half:

This is all true. But again, not a ringing endorsement - big pickup trucks are far too infrequently used as work vehicles (although many are) and never need to carry more than a couple of coolers for tailgate parties. Saying it’s no more dangerous than any other oversized, poor visibility vehicle being impractically used for a daily commute is again, damning with faint praise.

Age/sex-wise, sure. But he’s also a bit, shall we say, European. Not noted for their giant truck sensibilities. I guess maybe the result is exactly what we got out of him: appreciates the aesthetic aspects, but still finds it a bit monstrous.

No disagreement there. But pickups are extremely popular in the US, and aren’t going away. It’s a legit criticism, just not one of the Cybertruck specifically. And, well, if people are going to buy a pickup anyway, it may as well be electric.

And on this we are in agreement. I do also point that all of the posts touching on surface reactions with the all-metal body (and May’s point about fingerprints) just makes me wonder again why there wasn’t a layer of clearcoat. Choices, choices.

Side note as it applies to me, and complaints about both SUVs and Pickups of all varieties.

Dammit, I wish there were more AWD BEV and PHEV sedans period, especially ones at a reasonable price point rather than only the tippy-top ends!

Sorry, rant off.

I’m not invested enough to go digging through my history for “cites” but the couple video reviews I’ve seen were more “Parts of it are technically impressive, parts of it are underwhelming or just sorta dumb… and also it looks stupid.”

No one was saying it just sucks but no one was just in awe of the package and thus forgave its looks either.

I think they’re kinda cool, in a low-res Tron kinda way, but I’d never buy one even if the price were anything close to sane.

That said, I’m in L.A. this week and have seen several out on the streets.

He’s also, and I cannot emphasize this enough, trying to sell gin.

Can you ever say anything negative about a Tesla?

  • A lot of people who use them for work trucks put a toolbox in the front of the bed; due to the slope of this thing you can’t do that with a CT
  • Sure it comes with a tonneau cover but at it’s angle you can’t get nearly the storage that one can with a camper top on it. They’re almost common at this point but I have yet to see a CT with any type of top on one. I know they make a camping specific one. Do they even make a ‘standard’ one that allows you to store stuff dry in inclement weather, w/o a slope.
  • The towing range on this thing sucks. What percent of recharge stations could you fuel up w/o having to disconnect the trailer?

Of course I can. The quality control isn’t great. Repairs are expensive. Service centers are unevenly distributed. They make a lot of promises that get delivered late, if at all. They use early customers as beta testers.

I just don’t like bad logic. If you’re going to critique it, it should be on things that are specific to it, not a feature of all trucks. The Cybertruck doesn’t have great visibility, but it’s probably a little better than average with the large number of cameras and the short hood.

I’m sure someone will find a workaround. You don’t need a locking box due to the tonneau cover. The bed has equipment rails on the sides; it wouldn’t be hard to build a system where the tool box is stored at the front for maximum height (and could even be angled for max volume), but slides toward the rear for access. Could even be motorized (there are outlets in the rear). Hopefully some aftermarket provider is thinking of this kind of thing.

Looks like this company is offering pre-orders for a full enclosure:

No idea how legit they are.

They’re working on adding more pull-through stalls. Don’t know how common they are yet.

Obviously, I’m not saying that an EV truck is a perfect fit for everyone right now. Just that if it is a good fit, we’d like people to be buying them, and the more viable models are out there, the better chances we have of that happening. Only a small number of truck owners ever tow anything, so that’s not a reason we shouldn’t see the majority of trucks be EV.

I may have seen a first. I spotted a cybertruck on the freeway……actually being used as a truck. The back part was open and it was hauling a bunch of furniture. It appeared to have less space than a regular truck.

Wow. Cool. As I’ve said several times upthread I see a lot of CTs. I have yet to see one with the tonneau open, much less with stuff hanging out.

I saw a CT on the interstate about a week ago that was hauling two small dressers. It couldn’t have been a very heavy load at all. They were strapped down very neatly.

The weird part was that the CT was doing less than 50 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. Maybe limping to the next charger?

A few weeks ago I saw one at the Floor and Decor being used to haul tile, and one at the beach hauling beach supplies.

I don’t think has been posted yet as it just came out. It is a close look at the various issues surrounding the Cybertruck. Some More News has a bias (they’re progressive) but they do a good job of researching and presenting material. Musk fans need not watch, you won’t enjoy it.

And now this:
