Tesla Cybertruck

Warts and all.

Just off of US-101 in Gilroy CA is a Tesla dealership with a bunch of Cybertrucks. For only about $85,000, you too can have one.

There must be a lot of regional variability. Here in the Pacific NW, I see several Rivians every day, they’ve become commonplace. At Cybertruck peak, before Musk/DOGE, I was seeing 2 to 3 CT per day, but now I barely see 1 per week.

I wonder how often Gilroy gets hailstorms.

Probably once a decade. California is not thunderstorm country.

Rivians are easy to spot in traffic because of the headlights and the Cybertrucks stand out because they are hideous. Ford F-150 Lightnings don’t really stand out unless you take a close look at the grills.

I wonder where the CTs are disappearing to?

I don’t mean to question your experiences; I’m just trying to divine some meaning for, or mechanism behind, what you report.

They’re apparently kind of hard to sell or trade in. And of those that do get sold/traded in, you’d expect many (most?) of them to remain in the local area so you’d still be seeing them around, unaware that somebody else is now driving them.

The alternative is that folks who own them aren’t driving them. Which suggests they now have some other vehicle to drive instead. Kinda expensive to just let it sit fallow. OTH, if they’re hoping the resale market recovers once musk learns to shut up, it might make sense to park it for a few months or a year and hope for a better market later.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Where I am we have such a seasonal difference between our summer / year-round population and our snowbird-augmented winter population that it’s hard for me to separate the reduction in CTs I’ve seen over the last 2-ish months from the reduction in total cars I’ve seen.

But is sure seems like their volume as a percentage of all cars out there has stopped increasing. And might well be drifting downwards.

We have located the elephant graveyard.

I saw my first Cybertruck in the wild yesterday.

I’ve seen a lot of the sedans, but first time for the Cybertruck.

Thoughts, @Northern_Piper ?

I had the same question. Good one.

A couple days ago I saw something I had not seen before: a CT wrapped in white. It was going the opposite way so I did not get a long look at it. But it initially registered as a failed attempt at origami.

Hint, people: if you have a CT, don’t wrap it in white.

I saw my first this past January in a multi-story parking garage near the St. Lawrence Market. It looked dingy, with stains on the supposedly stainless steel body, both what looked like finger/hand marks and grime, probably salt and dirt spray from street slush. The build quality was pretty bad, uneven gaps and noticeable edge misalignment between the panels. It didn’t loom as much as I thought it might from photos, it’s wide but not tall.

There’s a Tesla dealership in Gilroy right next to highway 101. They’ve lined up all their Cybertrucks in a conspicuous row so that the millions of freeway travelers get a good view of them. At this point, every single truck is covered in dust and dirt, which means they’ve all been sitting there a long time without being sold - or washed. Ha!

I wonder if I, while traveling on the freeway in the slow lane, could chuck an egg and hit one of them?

I saw something novel with a CT yesterday. Or at least novel to me.

I saw a standard stainless finish CT towing a trailer. First time evar I’d seen that. It was a ~20’ U-Haul 4-wheel flatbed. Had something rectangular and shrink-wrapped on the trailer. Looked about the size of two or 4 household refrigerators all taped together under the shrinkwrap. ~5’ high, 5’ wide, 10’+ long.

I also noticed the CT was driving very much unlevel, dragging its rump low along the ground. So whatever the tongue weight was, the CT suspension was not properly compensating for all of it.

Not all Cybertruck owners are fascists. This one at the LA protests carries a Mexican flag and has such slogans as “fuck ICE” and “ACAB” painted on it.

Doesn’t particularly strike me as something somebody would do to am $80k vehicle they own.

There’s a rainbow pride one that I’ve seen driving around my area.

It’s a black wrap that has been painted. Supposedly the truck is owned by the owner if this car customization shop, so rewrapping is wholesale not retail. Someone has taken care to avoid painting the windows.

You can also paint the car’s graffiti using water-soluble paint. Rain in LA in June isn’t much of an concern.
