Mmm, the Edsel was not an unusual car for its era; a typical late 50’s land boat. Its problem was in marketing.
At the time, major auto makers had multiple makes aimed at different segments. For example, GM had Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick and Chevrolet in order from most expensive to least. FoMoCo had three: Lincoln, Mercury, Ford. Chrysler had one too, I believe, but I’m not sure what the order was.
Anyway, some executive at Ford got envious of GM having four makes and decided Ford needed another one to match. So they came up with a car that supposedly was between Lincoln and Mercury and named it after Henry Ford’s son. The problem was, there was no gap there. So there was no market for the new car and it tanked. And by association, kind of ruined the reputation of Edsel the man, who was by reports, a good auto exec.
He certainly was. He saved the Ford company by pushing for the Model A. His father Henry stuck with the Model T well past the point where cars from other manufacturers surpassed it. Edsel helped convince Henry that they needed a new model designed from the ground up, and also helped with the design of the new car. If Ford had stuck with the Model T much longer, the company might have gone out of business.
Are they all wrapped? I still remember the DeLorean kitchen sink when it came out. The CT suffers from the same lack of visual appeal even if you like the cube art styling.
We’re maybe 60% wrapped in something. There’s a fad here now to wrap them in chrome. So they’re still monochromatic metal, but at least they’re shiny; very shiny. So overall maybe 40% raw original stainless, 10% chrome, and 50% every other color and finish you can imagine.
I keep hoping for a Hello Kitty CT, but I’ve not seen one yet.
I expect that militias, insurgents, and war lords around the world are working to green their fleets of Toyota Hilux by replacing them with Cybertrucks. Important that the Air Force stay prepared for our new carbon neutral adversaries.
For me, it’s about 70:30 unwrapped:wrapped, and then of the wrapped, about 50:50 personal:business. I will say this, I just saw another wrapped black Cybertruck yesterday and I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t really look all that bad in black.
I don’t know - I’ve always been fascinated by ugly vehicles, like pre-Dreadnaught battleships or the Fiat Multipla. The aggressively ugly is so much more interesting than the merely bland. The Cybertruck looks like a future inductee to the ugly vehicle hall of fame, and I’d like to see one in person while they are still any left.
