There’s another thread around here but I can’t find it.
So if you took the test, how did you do? I figure they must have dumbed down the questions, cause I got a 130. Top 10%. Qualifies me for MENSA apparently.
So as I’ve always suspected, I’m a super genius (57 out of 60) Cecil? Care to step up?
I’ve taken a monitored test twice before. I had a 138 and a 153 those times. It seems striking how much lower I got this time.
The other times I took an IQ test, the entire test was timed. I finish so quickly and have a relatively high score, that I usually get a good bonus for speed of mind.
Anyway, 118 was pretty good I guess. I was let down. I did choke on two questions I knew the answer to.
I too have had monitored tests before. First one was 145, second 135. Both times were done via psychologists. I’m not quite sure where to take a real test because I never looked around for one, they came to me. I’d be curious to know about the margins of error doing the computer test verson person-to-person. On two questions I went to answer right as the time was up, and one question I hit the wrong answer hitting the key for the last question right as time ran out. Also, how could the computer possibly account for realizing you answered the wrong answer after you’ve already hit the key? And were people who did the computer version liable to do better if they are used to playing video games or using computers in their daily life?
I’m a 57 out of 60 too. But I officially protest one of them The
Parquet, Carpet, Asphalt and smothing else one, The carpet is most different in my mind since it doesn’t have a hard smooth texture, and I have seen Asphalt in several houses.
All the ones I missed were in language, I aced all the rest.
I was with you there too, infact had marked that as my answer until I realized that parquet, carpet, and linoleum are all floor coverings and are laid on something else, whereas asphalt is a floor itself.
I did mark that one as a potential argument though.
I never did kep tabs, I just answered out loud as the questions were asked… at least I was when I was not laughing that Heidi Flice was on the Celeb panel as an “author”
I got 55/60 and 127 in the 18-35 group, so you’d probably be at 124 or so, pure.
I only feel that I genuinely missed/didn’t know 2 - with 2, I was considering the right answer but felt rushed on time a bit and made a bad split second decision. I guess that’s the point, but in a real IQ test, as far as I know, the test as a whole is timed, and if I had that option, I’d have gotten it.
The other one was a math pattern one, though I don’t remember exactly which one it was. Essentially, I found a consistent pattern in there that resulted in a number that just wasn’t an option for the question. So I found a pattern, just not the right pattern they were looking for - and by the time I realized that, I didn’t have time to figure out the ‘official’ pattern.
Max Carnage - on this test, 130 is top 2%, not top 10%. Even better, eh? Top 2% qualifies for Mensa.
Also, the reason many of you may have scored differently on this test than you are used to is because this test has a 15 point standard deviation. The same person will get different scores on different tests. That’s why Mensa uses a percentile rank rather than a specific score. Mensa qualification is two standard deviations above average, or the 98th percentile.
In other words, a person scoring 130 on this test would score a 148 on the Cattell which has a standard deviation of 24 points. I hope this information is useful.
I’m a Mensan, and I suspect that there are quite a few Dopers who are or could be. I think many people are smarter than they think. Contact me if you would like information about joining Mensa or would like a member’s perspective of the society.
Incidentally, although I’m proud to be a member, I’m not mentioning this to show off. I just want to be a resource for those of you who are interested in the organization.
I know I missed a few out of the first 27, but I didn’t finish because it takes so long! even though you can’t change your answer, it keeps you from advancing after you’ve picked; you have to wait for the time to run out. Bleah.
