Test thread for fixing CBC.ca article previews

This screenshot will be sent to CBC.ca to help diagnose why articles won’t preview on Discourse.

Yahoo News article:

Edit: no further action should be required on this end so thread can be closed if needed although I will happily post updates if I receive any.

This has annoyed me for a long time, so thanks for informing the CBC folks of this deficiency. My experience has been that many small websites don’t have the proper information in their interface for Discourse to create the Onebox preview, but most major ones do. It’s surprising that this was overlooked at cbc.ca.

Huh. That is interesting. I didn’t notice any missing og meta tags. But looking at the source of the Yahoo page, I notice it has the og:image:type and the image dimensions (og:image:width and og:image:height). But surely those wouldn’t be required.

The only other thing is the addition of a data-rh property in each meta og tag. But that shouldn’t impact anything, and is common on any site that uses React.

Anyways, thought I’d post my observations here just in case they were useful. I was curious myself.

Is there some messed up localization? The headline says something about Canada providing US$, but according to the first sentence there are no US$, or CAD for that matter— they are providing UAH. Then clicking on the actual article says that they are really providing CAD (which seems to be the truth).

Have you tried asking at the Discourse Meta for help diagnosing it?

That link correctly oneboxes at the Discourse Meta:

So maybe it’s a local setting or plugins issue here, and not anything CBC could fix.

That example is from 2019, maybe something has changed since then.

Here’s a Straight Dope example from 2022 that OneBoxed properly at the time:

Trying it now:

Moved to Site Feedback, as this is really about Discourse and not about the SDMB.
