Thanks LSLG. That worked well.
BTW WTF is LSL?
The Initials Of The Town I Lived In When I Joined The
Straight Dope Message Board.
LOL, clever.
I used to travel to Maryland Heights (near LSL, right?) several times a year for work. Living now near San Francisco, but having grown up in Upstate New York, I enjoyed going there in the winters, especially when the storms were severe. Most people in the office would work from home, but I would do the commute to the office. The few in the office would call me crazy, and I suppose I am a little, because I actually enjoyed it. I’d tell them that living in this weather was far different from simply visiting it.
Yeah, Maryland Heights & LSL are both suburbs of greater St. Louis. Maryland Heights being mostly an older area than LSL.
My late wife was like you; grew up in hard core snow country, lived in various places later, and enjoyed StL winters while we lived there as baby versions of what she’d grown up with. Me, a boy from SoCal, found still finds the entire idea of temps <50F to be real suspect.
Just ran into a curious bug when cut and pasting a link into a post, instead of generating the expected link, the following message appeared in the preview window:
Not Found - Canada.ca
Sorry, we were unable to generate a preview for this web page, because the following oEmbed / OpenGraph tags could not be found: description, image
However, when I enclose the link in the [url] [\url]
tags, I get the following:
Not as pretty, but at least it’s a working link.
Will Tyson win?
@discobot fortune
My sources say no
That is the normal behavior of Discourse when it can’t generate a OneBox preview. It happens on a lot of websites.
If you don’t use url tags to stop Discourse from making the OneBox preview, you still get a working link. It just doesn’t have a useful preview. The message about not being able to generate a preview doesn’t show up when you actually submit the post. Just the link shows up. It’s just warning you that you won’t see a little preview box for the link once you post it.
I don’t know that I would call it a bug when that is the way it is designed to work.
If you go back and edit the post, the OneBox preview warning is still there, but the actual post just has the link.
Never mind; simulpost and ninja’ed.
Okay, not a bug, just a surprise as it was the first time this has happened to me.
Another test:
An article about preserving cooper and brass
I used the [url="link"]Some descriptive text[/url]
syntax and now the link is a bit prettier!
Amplifying a bit, creating the “onebox” depends on the target webpage having a few hidden tags that are there to help search engines and screen readers. It’s a well-known industry standard, but compliance with it is totally optional.
Many websites and webpages bother to provide those helpful tags, but others do not. The only practical way to know whether they do or don’t is to try posting the bare link and see what result you get.
Well that didn’t work…

Finally!
Hmmm, interesting
.
Did you read the instructions on vid posting?
The problem is 100% reliably worked around … if you follow the recipe.
