It was dropped due to massive public outrage. Participatory democracy at work!
I don’t think I’ve said this to anyone since my Fark days, but you win the thread!
I had a couple of white buddies in college – and yes, this was in Texas, mind you – who one Halloween made up as blacks. I don’t mean black face; I mean black BODY, covered in shoe polish. They practiced and rehearsed black slang beforehand. I mean, they were serious about it, and you know what? They were damned good. They passed in public!
Addendum: When our black friends realized who it was, they bust a gut laughing.
Not a one. They don’t seem to hang out in bars much.
Or if they do, they’re reeeeeal quiet about it.
I wish I had a copy of The Last Dragon after reading this.
Is Ken Corley a dumbass?
Sho’Nuff!
Is he a waste of life?
Sho’Nuff!
Is pretending that racism can be fixed by banning the word ‘nigger’ even dumber than calling a person ‘nigger’?
Sho’Nuff!
‘Nampersandpercentdollarsign’ is a racial slur in Texas?
Quite well, so far in this thread.
Really? I see a reference to the location as Texas and a pretty universal condemnation of the idea with some shots at the mayor who proposed the law, but I can’t seem to find the statements that actually condemn the population of the state of Texas of racism.
Today’s CNN.com page has a link to a video on the story, with the headline link titled
Town fights for, wins right to keep using slur
which rubs me the wrong way for some reason, although I guess it is technically accurate. I suppose the headline
Town opposes idiotic law, fights to preserve right of free speech
just wasn’t inflammatory enough.

That’s why people like Jon Stewart hate CNN now.

.
I’m kinda failing to see how accusing an entire state of something based on the stupidity of a few differs from racism or bigotry in general. “There’s a bigot so let’s broadbrush 20 million people.” How does that work?
Because Texas seems to serve up a lot of them - Clothahumpie being a fantastic example* here on the SDMB.

*Idiots, not racists
Texas Leads Fight Against Racism
When I saw this, I thought: What the fuck?!
Then, I saw it was a Pit Thread.
Carry on.
I don’t burn flags, but if an anti-flag-burning law were passed I would probably start.
I don’t use the N-word, but if a law were passed prohibiting it, I would very likely purchase a megaphone and start shouting it in public places.
And, wow, CNN. Just wow.

And people wonder why it is said that there is a liberal slant in the media. CNN is a poster child for it.

Come on! Give us another thesis on how you’ve proven the Librul Media! Come on! Do it! It’s always so entertaining!
Maybe you can include diagrams this time, too!

Growing up in Texas away from any large urban centers – I was in a city, but a very small one and hours away from anything else even close to its size – there were some scary people. Enough to make me want to leave. But there were many good and decent folks, too, I have to say. Texas has become a lghtning rod for ridicule for this sort of thing. It’s not entirely undeserving but still somewhat unfair. If a blackface party happened in certain other states, it might still attract attention, but the fact that it’s Texas just magnifies it.

-Exactly.
Like HH (from Austin no doubt?) I doubt the purity of the sentiment.
It’s always funny to see the mob mentality. C’mon people, I’ve been to GQ, you know stats, right?
LouisB, blow me.
Bosda, I enjoy your posts, but you are waaay off here. I’m disappionted.
Thanks, TnD.
I’d just like to say this case has aleady been tried. In the '60’s (or was it the early 70’s?) It went to the Supreme Court. This guy came into the court house where an antiwar portest case was being tried, wearing a “Fuck War” jacket. Was prosucuted for “saying” fuck in court. The SCotUS said you can’t ban a particular word. No fucking way. I wish I could remember the specific court case.
Anyway what whoughd this do to “Huckelberry Finn”? Or my friend who calls himself a “street nigger”? (or me who sometimes calls hime that just to be polite?)
With regards to my above post, sorry guys. Though my sentiments are true I commited a board no-no and posted after a few too many.
Apologies.
