Mine was ever so confusing for a new reader just learning the wonders of the school library. The word “illustrated” completely dumbfounded me. It was usually on the cover of a book, in a sans-serif typeface, capitalized. To me, the word began with 3 "i"s and was unpronounceable. Illustrated. See? The serif makes ALL the difference. :o
Similar to the pen island url, I used to work in airline reservations where in our computer system everything was capitalized and the only punctuation available was a period. Group bookings had the name of group mooshed together followed by “GRP.” Imagine my surprise to come across the Friendly Hill Sex Change Group. FRIENDLYHILLSEXCHANGEGRP. Yeah. Try "Friendly Hills Exchange Group. :o
On that note: I’m a big Beatles fan, and I’ve long known that “spanner” is Brit-speak for what I would call a wrench, but it took me several years to realize that “A Spaniard in the Works” was a play on words based on the apparently common British phrase “a spanner in the works.”
I guess there was something about the double-jump required (both the wordplay of Spaniard/spanner AND the inclusion of the British version of a familiar phrase) that I just never caught on. I was slightly stunned that it took me so long to understand it.
“In His Own Write” was a little easier, I guess.
Same with me… I think the cover photo helped, though.
