I don’t think this is a good idea. But you embraced it. As for what happens if Liberal reneges, leave that to Tris and ongoing Dopers. Tris is agreed to be a trustworthy third party. Honouring promises no matter what is what being a trustworthy third party is all about.
You’ve got to go, but I don’t think you will. I expect you to squirm like a maggot on a smoking log - probably whilst calling it interpretative dance. Just to give context on my judgment - I’m an atheist who’s previously accused Liberal of trolling.
[on edit: this was posted before seeing Tris’s post]
All he is doing is assuring the check is actually good before he begins his departure. Are you in that much of a hurry? Is it not enough you have established a new and very bad method for dealing with users you do not like?
**Liberal ** for what little it is worth, my respect for you has sunk to a new low.
If you are willing to throw away $500 dollars over someone that annoys you on a message board I think you have some serious issues. That money could be spent on a good charity or in my case a pair of local Doperfests.
I like the fact you have paid for users memberships to continue. This is a good thing. I admirer the fact you have established real friendships with people. However, this episode is despicable to me. Far more than your notorious thread shitting and attention whoring that you cannot seemingly resist. I learned to ignore these after my first experience with you doing it. This is a whole new level of crazy with a heavy tinge of malignancy even from you.
Jim {you should note, I have never been one to hound you or give you a hard time. I read your posts without pre-judgment.}
Your respect is worth a lot, but your willingness to withdraw it based on something you don’t quite understand is… well, disappointing. And surprising.
Which proves you don’t understand what happened. It’s like you’ve read what ETF or Bryan said about the offer and took your position from that, rather than from what I — the offerer — said.
Then tell that to PRR. That’s exactly what was to be done until he rose up to demand the original terms.
Great. Ask me nothing. Just go ahead and make up your mind. It seems there’s more than one new level here.
Just a little help please, it is a three page thread, where in the thread is the Good Advice buried?
Liberal, in the end, you just paid a poster $500 to go away. I see no other way to interpret this and I am surprised that Mods have allowed this to happen.
Even if you are correct in your beliefs and *PRR ** is too much of a jerk in his posting style, this should not have been the way to resolve the problem.
Jim
** I do not think you are correct and obviously I do not think **PRR ** is too much of a jerk. *
No way, prr, you’re done. A deal is a deal. I wish it had gone the other way because that would have been more amusing but it didn’t and it’s still pretty damn amusing anyway. So long, dude, your bluff has been called but you still get to rake in some chips.
I believe **Trisk ** has clarified the situation a few posts up. When **PRR ** posted that, **Trisk ** had not yet clarified the situation. If he comes back now, it will indeed be **PRR ** weaseling. He should be Emailing **Trisk ** about any remaining questions.
What Exit, it may help you to understand some of the posts that have gone past you to realize that, just occasionally, some of us post with a wee tetch of humor… (See e.g. most of Bryan Ekers’ posts in this thread.)
While the particular deal between Lib and the departed poster is too bizarre to be fall-on-the-floor, rip-your-pants funny, it’s certain to become part of board lore, related to disbelieving newbies by jaded Charter Members, in a “I seen a bit o’ everything in my time here, Junior” manner.
And just to say it, although it’s worth no more than your assessment, Jim… my respect for Lib remains as it was.
To have made the offer was crass and over the top. But not the most crass, nor the most over the top post on the SDMB (or from Lib for that matter), even in the 24 hour period in which it was made. To have accepted such an offer, on the other hand, whether the departed intends to honor it or not, sets a new standard for message board disingenuity after making such a point to be a crusader for a Cause. It’s not usually the martyred ones who walk away with 30 pieces of silver…
You mean prr paying Liberal to leave? Because that would be funny.
Incidentally, should prr blink and decide to forego the $500, I won’t think any less of him.
prr won’t be checking in, I don’t think – I got an email from him this morning saying the deal is done, that he and Tris have been in communication. I got said email because prr and I are friends IRL and we sometimes discuss goings-on here at the Boards – including his behavior, which, frankly, makes zero sense to me, despite his efforts to explain it. Unlike Poly, though, who claims that lib is a nice guy, just misunderstood, I’m not going to try to excuse or explain prr’s behavior here, which I find obnoxious in the extreme. Which is why I’ve not mentioned that prr and I are friends, which we are – that fact is irrelevant in this context.
(I can, however, assure Zoe that he is, in fact, an English professor – and that his claim to have sold a piece of writing to another Doper for publication is true – I am that Doper, I’m editor in chief of a nationally distributed publication, and the piece will run in that publication. Let me know who you want to check *my * credentials, and I’ll proceed with that step.)
Anyway, my point here is not to praise prr, nor to bury him – he did that himself just fine, with no help from anyone – but to say, my god, lib, in a career of full-tilt assholery, this is a new low. “Blah blah blah, this is about prr selling his honor” – no, it’s about your being shamed into following through on a blowhard threat you shouldn’t have made in the first place.
How very odd. It turns out that bagman is a more complex job than I might have imagined.
If Liberal were to deliberately engage in some fraud with respect to his payment to me, that would constitute a failure on the deal. It is a failure of the deal that is, and will remain outside of the view of the posters on the board. The exact details of the transaction between Lib and I are a private matter. The exact details of the transaction between PRR and I are also a private matter. (We bagmen take privacy seriously, too!) By that method, the transaction is between the two, with no involvement by me, other than the private matters of the transaction. I am effectively invisible to the matter, unless I fail in my office.
However, it is important to note that my own sense of my integrity would demand that non compliance not be invisible. I would report to the community any violation of the agreement by either party if it happened. That would be unnecessary in the case of a post by PRR, but I would post an acknowledgment here (in the PIT) were it to happen. Isn’t it obvious that I therefore must post a similar acknowledgement, in gross fact, if not in detail of any equivalent failure on Lib’s part? My understanding of the concepts of honor, and integrity could demand nothing less.

For the record, I would like to note that I too can be bought for the low, low price of $500 – payable in advance in my case, since there’s no chance I would be so foolish as to forego posting without getting to spend the money instead. For $250, I’ll only post on alternate days. For a mere $100 I will follow you around for a month, commenting on the brilliancy of your posts.
Be your limerick bitch for 50 clams? Soitenly! But ony if you notify my every time my services are needed. I’m not following you around the board for 50 small.
Oh, so now you start with the conditions, huh? Way to weasel out of the deal! A first-rate sycophant doesn’t need a cue (well, maybe a clue, but that’s a source of another choler).
The offer’s down to $39.95 for prenoticed adoration, but you can upgrade to add haiku for a combined fee of $75 per quarter, payable in arrears.
