Maybe the depth of its love has clouded its vision.
Like he’s tearing up as the love between is so overwhelming? Fair.
DMC:
Now that we have the flaws covered, years ago (long before he started working on Discourse and even before stackoverflow) he was the person who introduced me to Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software , by Charles Petzold. I love that book so much that I added it to the “New Hire Package” at the office, although I’m down to my last few copies and it appears to be out of print for now. He’s also a big Tufte fan, and I’m always happy to find like-minded designers.
More importantly to this site, he’s been far more helpful in our transition to Discourse than should be expected of the software’s creator. We were on vBulletin for two decades and I can’t name a single person/user associated with them. His activity level here comes close to what I’d expect if the software had been written specifically for this board.
Discourse isn’t perfect. It is a well-designed piece of software that might take design directions that I don’t always agree with, but even they appear to be in place for a reason.
Rock on, Jeff!
Jeff also saved my grandma from that crocodile during the hurricane .
Help us improve the copy and the “just in time” nature of the messaging so it’s better! We are always open to copy suggestions to make stuff friendlier.
For example, you may remember the composer got a lot better when y’all discussed how “abandon your post” felt weird. You were right! That kicked off some useful introspection.
Also we just had a new release! Check out all the new goodies you get… for the low, low price of
Ooh, I like this! Thanks for listening and adding more features, codinghorror !
These are my favorites from the list.
Composer Enhancements
We’ve made the composer more reactive to what you’re doing. When you’re editing, you will see the edit pencil at the upper left. When you’re creating a new topic, you’ll see the plus, when you’re whispering, you’ll see the eye glyph, and so forth.
The Submit button also changes in a similar manner, so it’s crystal clear what will happen when you push the button.
and this
You may be familiar with Discourse Oneboxing, where you paste a link on a line by itself and it expands to provide useful context and a summary of the link. Well, we’ve improved oneboxing so it provides better dynamic feedback in the editor when things aren’t right on the target site — and we’ve also enabled inline oneboxing . When a link isn’t on a line by itself, it will still update to use the title of the target webpage as the link target rather than a bare hyperlink. So instead of https://example.com you’ll see Example Domain … try it out!
and this
This looks fascinating
Not sure if topic timers will be enabled here, but we’ll see.
Topic timers are super flexible and allow you to do lots of interesting time-related tasks with topics, such as auto-close, auto-open, auto-delete, auto-delete replies (mostly useful for wiki topics), auto-bump, timed publishing to a specific category, and more.
We’ve also added relative time support, so you quickly specify “close this topic 3 days from now” without needing to look at a calendar.
I make light use out of Topic Timers. Usually to close a thread for 10 or 15 minutes or the like. One time I closed a thread, meant to go back to it and got pulled away with IRL stuff and didn’t reopen for hours. So Topic Timers are very useful.
@What_Exit , are topic timers available for posters? Can a poster start a topic that closes when they choose? I’m pretty sure that posters can’t delete topics or replies.
I don’t have a clue, but I’m pretty sure the answer is no. I think the only thing general users can set timers on are polls.
. . .and bookmarks. Thanks for the reply.
Hey, I found a shot of the old vB server.

Oh, that’s the upgraded Guinea Pig server. It was a big improvement over the Hamster 3000.
I remember reading about that one in an issue of Rodent Rack.
[end questionable car magazine pun]
Nah, the old vB server never had that much energy!

Remember we’re watching a loop. That hamster made it partway up the left side of the wheel exactly once then collapsed in a heap at the bottom, panting for breath.
Modhat : Damn, I forgot, no animated GIFs allowed on the Dope, I’ll spoiler the link.
Thanks. How does one get that triangle thingy in a post?
It is under the Gear Icon, called Hide Details.
