I know I’m not the only person who reads Cafe Society for recommendations on books, movies, music, and the like – and I know I’m not the only one who hasn’t necessarily thanked the person who recommended something. (Of course, I don’t always remember exactly who it was … my Amazon wishlist notation is usually just “sdmb.”) So – anyone you want to thank for a good tip on something worth reading/seeing/listening to?
What immediately brought this to mind was Marley23, who I got into a back-and-forth on in a music thread on the Derek Trucks Band. He or she (sorry, I have no clue) wrote me an email to see if I’d followed up, so I bought the CD s/he’d recommended, and am listening to it – with great pleasure – as I type. Thanks, marley!
Another shout-out to whoever recommended Kim Stanley Robinson’s Years of Rice and Salt in a thread about alternative histories a couple of years ago. I acquired a copy soon after, and it sat on my shelf for quite a while after that, so I have absolutely no idea who it was – but I absolutely loved this book, one of the best novels I’ve read in the last five years or so. If it was you who recommended it, pls. step up and take a bow!
How about you? Any Dopers you need to thank for turning you on to the good stuff?
