The Straight Dope helps me out again.

I was in Latin class today, and one of the guys in my class was going on the web, looking up random common phrases (i.e., whole nine yards, putting your two cents in). Okay, and then he came to “son of a gun” and of course, I knew what it meant, from Cecil! Yay!! Of course, it’s when illegitmate offspring were conceived under cannons on ships. Thank god for the Straight Dope…Just had to put in a word here.

I don’t think children were conceived here, not all of them anyway. I think they were delivered under, or by a gun.
