I resent that. I was there. I had those discussions with you. I read both Kerry’s biography and the Swiftboat book and I compared them side by side. You and I both went over several of the claims in such detail that we were actually examining maps of Cambodia to determine whether it was actually possible for Kerry to have been where he claimed. We looked at original sources online. We went into such detail about the Rasmussen incident as to cite procedures, and we both found that Kerry acted properly by accelerating forward when one swiftboat was disabled and they were taking fire.
As you know, the Swiftvet thing turns out to be a little more complex than the oversimplification you’ve made here. O’neil had been after Kerry since 1972. He debated him on Cavett. O’neil’s grudge is that he says Kerry came back and betrayed the soldiers still in Vietnam and all Vietnam Veterans service with his specious claims. That is the Swiftvets main grudge against Kerry and the bulk of the book. They also claim he exagerated his own service and outright lied. My conclusion was that Kerry served honorably. I would not expect though that you could come home from Vietnam and tell a bunch of shit about your fellow soldiers that you couldn’t prove and not expect it to come back and bite you in the ass. This was payback, and Keryy had it coming, IMO.

From me? I don’t recall it, and I hope it wasn’t. If it was, I sincerely apologize. You certainly didn’t deserve it. Thus, if they see injustices being done, they react poorly. If those injustices are being done in their name, by people who are supposed to represent them, it makes it quite difficult to compartmentalize, especially when you are talking to people who would mindlessly support and continue those injustices, all so they might do a little touchdown dance. Yes, to some it is hard to separate the dancer and dance because it isn’t a fucking dance.

The signal you should be getting is that the kind of civilized discourse about which the OP wistfully reminisces was never the norm.
