Thanksgiving Football

Looks like we may have at least one compelling matchup tomorrow (or maybe they all will be, who knows?), with the Vikings and Lions going after it in a divisional battle. I expect to see a lot of offense in that one. I think this game will be epic, the Lions need the win to try and usurp the Vikings in the divisional lead, and although I like the Lions because they are similar to my favorite team in playoff drought duration and finding unique, creative and crazy ways to lose games, I love me some Mike Zimmer. He’s my favorite NFL coach by far.

Chargers and Cowboys…could be good. They are only separated by one game in the W/L column, and the Chargers seem to have improved recently while the Cowboys have lost a few (better opponents though, to be sure). However, for the first time in recent memory, I will be a Cowboys fan, as I need the AFC Chargers at 4-6 to descend into oblivion to hopefully bolster the minute chances of another AFC team I like that’s 4-6 and who’s name starts with a “C” and ends with an “I”, and is synonymous with Skyline Chili.

Giants v Redskins could also be good, that Giants defense is starting to show up and the Foreskins are starting a slide that they must reverse to at least stay in the NFC wildcard discussion. Losing that OT game to the 'Aints was a titanic struggle…the Skins offense can bring it, but losing Chris Thompson is a big blow.

Whaddya think about the matchups?

Further, is there ANY way we can get different teams to play on Thanksgiving? I know it’s a tradition (is it a contractual rule?) for the Lions, Vikes, Boys and maybe the Pack to play on Turkey Day, but I wish there was more variety. So many of those games, combined with lots of trytophan tend to lull me to sleep.

At least yours has been to the Super Bowl.

How the hell do you even know what team I am talking about?

And that’s TWICE, sir. TWICE we’ve been there. And we should have won the one in 1988, which I watched on a tiny tube TV in a Fort Knox basic training auditorium because the drill sergeants took mercy on us that day. That was a really good football game, and it was weird…I was a Redskins fan at the time having grown up in NOVA most of my life as Dad constantly worked at the Pentagon.

Yeah, I’m a Lions fan by birth. I would love to see them get to the post season through the front door. They are definitely on an upswing right now. HOWEVER, the Vikings are really firing on more cylinders at the moment. So, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

The main event tomorrow is The Egg Bowl between Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Some say records don’t matter in this one. They are wrong. State will crush the Rebels.

The main event of the weekend, of course, is The Iron Bowl. ROLL TIDE!

…but this thread is about Thanksgiving NFL games. I do agree that Auburn v Bama is shaping up to be the game of the NCAA season. Sorry, SEC haters. The facts and wins bear out the dominance of the SEC.

Just the Lions and Cowboys, but you’ll often see other NFC North and East teams because they like divisional matchups. And the third game they added in the last few years is completely up for grabs.

Best Thanksgiving play ever: NFL Thanksgiving Day 1993 - Leon Lett Field Goal Mess Up - YouTube

We’ll be watching the Egg Bowl here, as an appetizer for Miami v Pitt, Georgia v GA Tech, and the Iron Bowl.

Opinions here are varied over if we want another shot at Auburn on a neutral field, or are better off against Bama. “Better off against Bama” are words seldom spoken in college football, but Auburn is really a terrible match-up for Georgia, as was demonstrated a couple of weeks back.

In a very real, and painful, manner.

I really hate the stupid showboating pre arranged TD celebrations.

Fan of the “No Fun League” I see.

I’m a fan of ‘act like you’ve been there.’

Is there any way we can FINALLY ban the Lions playing on Thanksgiving and let us see other teams? With rare exception they suck or are mediocre at best year after year.

Your respective winners here are gonna be the Vikes (handily); The Cowboys (by about 10) and the Skins…in the most lopsided of the three games. The Giants are simply dreadful…perhaps the worst team in the NFC, right down there with the Niners.

The best upset chance is the Chargers, if they can put some pressure on Dak and make him make bad choices. And if Rivers can find his groove. The only way for the Lions and their suspect pass defense to win is if the Vikes play down to them and turn the ball over more than a couple times. For the Giants to win, we would need to see Cousins toss a couple pick sixes and for Eli to play the best he has all year, with his front line stepping up and giving him the time he has not enjoyed in many weeks.

Why do the Vikings not just run the ball on the Detroit 37? Could have moved closer for a 50-yard FG try instead of having to punt.

Taking the Glass half full option, no one has to watch the Lions on the Sunday of Thanksgiving Weekend.

I don’t think that’ll will ever happen. The Lions were ones who started the NFL’s tradition of Thanksgiving football and any NFL commissioner who even suggested the Lions alternate the holiday play date with some other teams would end up with his head on a pike outside of Ford Field. For years, the Lions were the only team that always played on Thanksgiving and many of their fans still regard it as the only “real” game played that day. Other Thanksgiving games are not acknowledged. The Dallas Cowboys are considered interlopers who barged in and stole the Lions’ spotlight by fielding some of the greatest teams in NFL history and (most years) having win-loss records better than .500.

How 'bout Pitt (4-7) knocking off #2 (Undefeated) Miami? That was kinda fun to see.

The Egg Bowl was good, too, but that 4th quarter seemed to last forever.

As an FSU alum suffering through this miserable season, yes, it was good to see both Miami and Notre Dame take losses this season.

Yeah. That’s why I don’t bet on football. :smack:
