Did I hear there’s some talk (in the US) of moving Thanksgiving back one week to extend the Xmas shopping season? What the heck, are they serious? Did anyone else hear mention of this?
Say! Maybe we can move leap day in there, too!

Are you maybe hearing the story about FDR changing the date of Thanksgiving, or is this something new? http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/thanksg.html
IIRC, FDR moved Thanksgiving back a week to extend the Christmas shopping “season”. Some people went along with it, and others steadfastly refused. Also IIRC, the change was least popular in Southern states (because FDR was a Northerner?). After the experiment failed, it returned to the regular schedule. There was an episode about it on The History Channel.
A guy is taking a train from San Diego to Los Angeles. He asks the conductor how long the trip will be. The conductor tells him an hour and a half. Then the man asks how long the trip is from Los Angeles back to San Diego. The conductor says, “About an hour and a half. Why should it be any different?” The man replies, “Well, it’s not very long from Thanksgiving to Christmas; but it’s a very long time from Christmas to Thanksgiving!”
[sub]I don’t actually know how long a train trip between San Diego and Los Angeles is, but I had to guess at some time.[/sub]

Funny enough, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner takes 2 hours and 40 minutes to get from San Diego to LA, but the return trip is 2 hours and 50 minutes. (The southbound train has to stop several times to allow northbound trains to pass.)
