That Darned Seat Belt Light

My car’s seat belt light has suddenly decided that it doesn’t like me. Whenever I have a passenger in my car it will come on and off every few seconds (including annoying beeping), even when the passenger is wearing their seat belt.

My question is, is there any easy, cheap way to fix this. Hopefully something that I could do my self. I can’t really afford to go to a mechanic righ now, but it is really starting to get on my nerves. Any ideas?

Look for the wire going into the seat belt latch. There should be a connector around there. Unplug it and short it out (or perhaps open it - leave unplugged).

Also you could remove the bulb from the dash

This worked in my 81 rabbit that would not start unless seatbelts were connected. Then the sensor went out so i bypassed the sensor and viola car started.

Thanks, I will have to try this

Or instead of overiding this safety feature by “fixing” the problem as others have suggested, you could just polish up the dirty contact or tighten the loose connection which is causing the problem.

Next week, k2dave and drachillix will explain how to repair loud knocking noises from the engine by turning up the radio.

Can you cite one person who died or was injured because the seatbelt warning light was bypassed. Geeh, I not saying drive around w/o your seatbelt. I am trying to get rid of a distraction that really serves no purpose.

And as for the loud knocking sound - easily fixed by tunning your radio to any rock station and turning the volumn up just enough so you wouldn’t be able to hear the sound of a police siren directly behind you.
