I think it’s called Legacy of Star Wars or something…anyway… anyone watching it? Everytime I turn it on they’re showing scenes from and talking about the new episodes (I-III). Because it’s the 30th anniversary of Ep. IV, I figured they’d be talking about that more. I haven’t been able to watch more than a few seconds. Did anyone here watch it? Was it worth it?
I can’t tell from the tone of your post whether you were unable to watch, or simply couldn’t stand to watch. A number of users fail to distinguish between the two, but I’ll assume you only said this because you weren’t able to watch.
I liked it. It’s certainly not a behind the scenes featurette, if that’s an assumption you were under. It analyzes the story’s genesis and mythos, and draws comparisons to historical, mythological, biblical, and literary influences via interviews with authors, professors, filmmakers, and popular figures in politics and entertainment. It’s kinda interesting, although some comparisons they make are intentionally vague in order to conveniently draw a parallel. Still fun to watch though, and made me think critically about a few aspects of the story in a new light.
Having already read “Star Wars:The Magic of Myth”, I was a bit disappointed that the special pretty much followed the points of that book (in fact, the author of that book was one of the “scholarly” interviewees, i.e. not Newt Gingrich or Stephen Colbert
). I really wanted them to talk about, for example, the similarities between the fighting styles of using a light sabre versus using a katana, which was hinted at in one of the ads for this show. I mean, the endless comparisons of Luke’s light sabre to Excalibur are apt, I suppose, but when he actually fights with it, it looks more like he’s wielding a Masamune
Well, I love Camille Paglia, so I enjoyed her commentary.
I haven’t read the book referenced above, but I liked the special overall. I’m watching it again, in fact.
Being somewhat informed about history, I had already picked up on the parallels between the Galactic Senate and the Roman Republic/Empire, and even the “with us or against us” quotation.
Did anyone else notice that one of the scholarly interviewees is from The Atlas Society?
I actually liked it enough to watch the rebroadcast, ot was a nice congloermate of things I’d known or heard over the 30 years. What I didn’t care for was the companion piece on Star Wars tech. “We don’t have anything like this on earth now…” Well d’uh, if we did we’d be using it.
But all the clips made me dig through the dvds to find episodes one and two.
To clarify, I came in on the middle of it and saw a bunch of clips and commentary about the new episodes and thought, “oh man, is he (Lucas) just trying to promote and justify the new movies?” so I didn’t watch it. Anyway, if I see it on again I’ll give it a chance based on what I have read here. Thanks.
