Also, what a silly concept. Looks great, sure, what with the countdown being stopped and all. But a sports themed spot would have more of an impact, I would think. And still be right in line with the season, since it’s bowl game and near NFL playoffs time.
Oh well. This ends my amazingly profound observation.
I’ve rarely used my DV-R to pause live TV. It’s greatest value is that of a time shifter. I find that when I’m watching some live, especially a sporting event, I will just wait until a commercial.
My DV-R will only pause for an hour. So a few weeks ago my friend wanted to go eat while a football game was still going on. So I set it up to record and when I got back I couldn’t rewind it back to the point where I left for some reason.
To steal a line from a memorable episode of South Park (which I’ve never seen), Simpsons did it.
The episode involving the trillion-dollar bill opens with Springfieldianites counting down to the new year as a ball falls towards Town Hall. “Ten! Nine! Eight! Eight! Eight! Eight…” Chief Wiggum comments that they haven’t lost a year on his shift yet, and shoots some bullets into the ball, which starts to fall much faster. “Sevensixfivefourthreetwoone (ball crashes into roof and starts fire)”
That said, the commercial is damn funny. And as a TiVotee, nitpicker, and all-around smartass, I must point out the ad is actually for DirectTV with TiVo. (And I realize I’m spitting right in the face of TiVo’s recent announcement not to use their brand-name as a noun or verb. They’ll just have to Band-Aid their wounds.)
