That's A Fine Pickle I've Gotten Myself In

Went to an event this weekend and purchased a jar of brussels sprouts pickled b&b style. Delicious!

“b&b” = “bread & butter”, as in “bread and butter pickles”? Originally guessed typo for “BBQ style” but now not sure.

Yes, bread&butter. What is a BBQ-style pickle? Now, I’m curious!

I have no idea what a BBQ-style pickle might be, it was just my ignorant guess at what the term “b&b style” might mean!

Actually I’m now getting on my mind’s tongue a gustatory impression of a pickle that’s a little sweet, tangy and smoky, and I must say it might be pretty good. I’m not sure a cucumber would stand up to that flavor palette too well but I bet you could pickle an onion BBQ-style.

My parents used to make pickles. Sour pickles, half-sour pickles (same recipe, just remove them from the brine sooner) and bread and butter pickles.

The recipe for the sour pickles was mostly cukes and salt water, iirc. I guess friendly bacteria grow in the salt water and churn out acid. We just had a tub on them in the porch, and pulled them out when we wanted to eat some. There were some spices and garlic cloves bobbing in the brine, too.

The B&B pickles were a huge production, involving lots of giant pots and sugar and thermometers and canning baths. They were good, though. And because they were so sweet and sour, they kept forever in the fridge after you opened the jar.
