That's just great, Microsoft. Try selling THAT to Sooners and Aggies.

Longhorn? I’m sure fans and alums of all the other Big XII schools will alltogether love having that.

Then again, maybe it will work out afterall. Whenever Windows fails, we can just blame UT. :stuck_out_tongue:

Errrrrr…are you pitting the choice of name? Because it’s been called that for several years.

It’s also just the internal code name for the project, so the only folks from the other Big 12 schools who will be upset are those that are both football fans and who keep up with the computer press, so the set is rather small.

Yeah, evil Microsoft not taking account of college football fans before naming its new operating system.

Just out of interest, what are all those Sooners and Aggies going to do in protest? Switch to Linux? Or Apple?

Also—and if i’m wrong i’m sure someone will correct me—it’s not even clear to me that Longhorn will be the actual production name of this new OS. Longhorn is the name that Microsoft is using while it’s in development, but lots of products have development names that are ditched for more market-friendly brand names at release time.

Plus, Longhorn is just the code name for it. It’s not actually going to be released named that.
linky.

Huh. I thought it was just a codename. When they release it, they’re going to call it Rio.

They did call it Rio. Once. For 20 minutes.

With my luck, the release name will be UCLA.
Or Virginia Tech.

Rio?

They’re going to use the Duran Duran song aren’t they.

Windows 95 was “Chicago” and Windows XP was “Whistler.” I don’t know what Windows 98’s or 2000’s code names were.

If there’s some sort of theme to their code names I haven’t figured it out.

Of course when I think of Longhorn the first thing that comes to my mind is “full of bull” but that’s just me.

I misread the name and thought they were naming it after that chicken in the Looney Tunes cartoon.

I love it when Dopermemes morph!

You know, I’ve read this thread several times, and despite the fact that I saw “Longhorn” I kept thinking “Foghorn”. Never realized that’s not what it actually said.

Windows 98 was “Memphis,” I believe. Windows 2000 didn’t have one, although the first Service Pack was codenamed “Asteroid.”

The code name is – I say, the code name is — say, ah you listenin’ to me, boy? Pay attention when y’eldas ah speakin’ to ya.

Now, wheah was I?

It doesn’t matter what they call it, it still won’t work worth a damn.

You’d think after 20 years, they’d have gotten the bugs out. But noooooo…

Go rolleyes yourself. This thread was obviously a joke. Maybe it was too much an insider-joke to those who know the intense rivalry between the Aggies and Longhorns and the UT-Oklahoma battle. I was amused; but then I’m an Aggie. Class of 1992. Whoop!

And I’ll not use Longhorn. Though I’m troubled by whether I’ll use Tiger. I hate LSU even more than the tea-sippers.
See, that’s more joking.

Thanks, Homebrew. I was going to figure that many people would get the joke and if they didn’t, oh well, I guess they didn’t read the multitude of Pit threads during the NCAA Football post season.

I wonder how many construction worker/football fan/computer geek/Trekkers there are out there?

I will say this, tho. If they ever name a new OS “HAL,” I’m switching back to Linux!

FTR, this isn’t a Pitting. Joke Pittings are not allowed under the current reich. So, I put it in MPSIMS.

I also have an older Mac, still running somewhere in the 8s. A friend of mine has a G5 with OSX, and it sure is fast, but I have no need for it. Simply envy.

Back to the sortasubject, I first heard of Longhorn maybe about a year or so ago, and I wondered about the silly name then. Didn’t seem to fit in with the previous NT, Me, XP family of names. I didn’t realise it was a prerelease name. Even without being a Sooner fan, I think Longhorn would be a silly name to market an OS under.

But, now that point seems to be moo.

I mean, moot.

Sillier than “Sooner” or “Aggie”? “Trojan” probably wouldn’t be a great pick, or “Volunteer”. “Cornhusker”, “Buckeye”, “Bulldog”? Who knows…
