Probably my favorite “doesn’t quite get the concept” story is the 10-year-old son of a friend. When his older brother was being (friendlily) teased at an extended-family gathering we were present for about having begun dating, he msde this comment; "Kissing girls? That’s so gay!".
He could not figure out why everyone around him simultaneously broke down laughing.
Possible – my friend was a Simpsons fan when younger, though TTBOMK the kids were not (we spent one afternoon identifying cultural references in eposodes of “The Fairly Odd Parents”, though.
The fact that “gay” can be used non-offensively misses the point. Any pejorative can be used non-offensively, even the N-word.
The problem is that kids will associate homosexuals with lameness and stupidity when they hear the word “gay” used to describe lame and stupid things.
The campaign in the OP won’t stop homophobes from using the word “gay” to mean lame or stupid, but it might stop the people who are not currently aware of its negative impact.
Am I allowed to use the term “Jewish” to describe really cheap things? Why not?
What about the gay that means “looks like something a fag would wear/have/enjoy”? For instance, the holster that came with my expensive smartphone was very gay. I know because my homosexual friend Craig said so.
Actually there is another level of meaning in there, I’m a strange guy that does some weird shit, but I am neither fake nor extremely merry, nor am I even a homosexual.
No, he was attempting to be funny. I understood the “I am a queer guy” stuff, I was asking how (or if) it relates to his take on the whole issue because it sounds like he’s said different things at different times.
So, devilsknew: you’ve now seen cites from multiple dictionaries and sources show that “that’s so gay” does mean “that’s stupid.” Does this change your opinion?
I hate that there’s nothing that rolls off the tongue so well and means exactly the same thing. The closest thing is probably “that’s so lame,” and if you say that, you sound gay.
I say lame, too, because I don’t want to sound like a homophobe. But I sound gay. Maybe we could just slap each other and pull hair. I don’t want to throw any real punches.
If my friend starts watching Jon and Kate Plus Eight, how am I supposed to describe this behavior? What if I find him singing along to Jon Mayer? Or wearing a bright green shirt with pink pants?
Calling him a douchebag comes close, but it’s simply more effective to say he’s acting gay.
It kind of reminds me of the German word ‘irre’. It can mean “misleading, a mentally ill person, or that’s “crazy” (but in a queer-cool-gay way)”. Even the Germans didn’t try to regulate the word in deference to crazy people… I mean people say, “That’s so crazy!” all the time, but even I didn’t think to feel oppressed and wronged and feel the final solution was to start a campaign against the word “crazy”.
I have to say that “Gay” is a very useful and versatile word, and I for one can see no reason why it can’t have four cromulent meanings determined by context.
One thing that ardent Gay Rights people forget is that LGBT are in a minority- a fairly small minority, too, by most accounts (removing “bi for attention” girls from the equation). So, if the majority of people find “Gay” to be a useful word denoting lame, pathetic, sucky, terrible, embarrassing, or whatever, then that’s too bad for the LGBT community, unfortunately, and the more they try and stop people from using the term, the more contrariwise and people who hate being told what to do will continue to use it.
If they’d ignored it, I suspect the term would eventually fade out (in the same way no one besides Napoleon Dynamite generally describes awesome things as “Wicked” or “Radical”* anymore) and something else would come along
Let’s face it, it’s taken 50 years to convince people that “Nigger” is not an appropriate name for African-Americans (or dark-skinned folks in general), and there are still (too many) people who persist in using the word pejoratively. And if the majority of the population of the USA can’t convince everyone in the USA that black people shouldn’t be called “Niggers”, then the “Think Before You Speak” people have no chance of convincing teenagers and young adults to stop using the word “Gay” in the way they currently do.
*Except for King Radical of course, but he’s The Most Radical Man In The Radical Land.
