"That's what SHE said!" -- OK, but since when?

Another example from the 1979-1980 time frame: the Utopia album Adventures in Utopia has a song “Shot In The Dark” with the line
“Is that all there is to that? (That’s what she said.)”

There’s a line in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night that sounds like an “as the actress said to the bishop” joke whose meaning has been lost to time:

Bonos dies, Sir Toby: for, as the old hermit of
Prague, that never saw pen and ink, very wittily
said to a niece of King Gorboduc, “That that is is”…

“Why won’t you tell me what she said?”

I used to hear it as far back as my fraternity house in 1976.
