The 10 tattoos that annoy me most

Huh?

She’s pointing out the fact that Cisco claims that it used to be called a “lower back tattoo,” and now it’s a “tramp stamp” (or any of the other names he mentioned). Assumedly, there are no colorful names for it in at least certain other languages (I’m going to guess that Spanish is at least one of them).

I heard that the “arse antlers” name came originally from Sweden.

Me, I’m pissed off because I want a Chinese character tattoo - because I am a sinophile, I have lived in Hong Kong immersed in Chinese culture, I have travelled extensively in China over the past 15 years, I speak a bit of Cantonese and am learning Mandarin and Chinese written language, and there’s a specific Buddhist concept I wish to get, that is immaculately expressed in Chinese.

But I am loath to do it now, because every other dickwad has now got “egg foo yung” or “I’m a big-nosed monkey” tattoed on their neck or their arm in Chinese, and I would just look like someone who didn’t know what they were getting done.

Dash you all!

In fact exactly my problem, but with Japanese. I’m going to solve it by getting a picture of something I wanted anyway, and then incorporating the kanji (hanzi) into the picture itself, rather than as a script. As long as it doesn’t come from a cookie cutter design, I figure people who still think it’s cliche aren’t looking hard enough.

Ayup. The only name I know for it in Spanish is “un tatuaje en la espalda:” a tattoo on the back. There are bound to be others, but still, most of the people I know who have one only display it in private, some got it before I learned the expression “tramp stamp”.

I don’t have tattoos, but then, I don’t have a beard either and that doesn’t mean I’m against them.

Wouldn’t abstaining from getting a tattoo because of “what people would think” be the same as getting a tattoo just so people would think you’re cool?

ETA: Absolute creepiest tattoo EVER has to be THIS. For those that don’t know, it’s Maddox Jolie-Pitt.
Let me also preempt any “ohh i just haven’t the faintest idea who you’re talking about” snobs by saying it’s one of Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt’s kids.

ETA 2 : Also just adding, the tattoo is on neither Angelina or Brad. But a stranger.

I don’t have a tattoo-yet- but am planning on getting one soon. The one I have picked out is something I designed myself and has a very personal, special meaning to me, and I know it is something I will never regret.

I enjoy seeing other people’s tatts and hearing the whys of how they ended up with that particular design. Would I ever cover half my body with tatts? No. But each to his own!

I have four tats, one of which is from your list. That one is now my favorite.

He might have been the guy that passed out at the tattoo artist convention after hours party.

Nope, sometimes enough people of a certain group do one thing that it ruins the thing for everyone. I would never get a swastika on anything (tattoo or clothing or whatever), no matter how Buddhist I was, because it hasn’t yet been reclaimed in the west. I would also never fly an American flag or affix a “proud to be American” bumper sticker to my car, despite the fact that I am a proud American, because there are enough racist people who do those things that I don’t want to be associated with it.

We make judgements all the time based on preconceived notions. If you saw my swastika tatt, would you think I was Buddhist or a skinhead? Which is more common in America? Those preconceptions and stereotypes exist for a reason.

Hey, what’s up my knitter?

You’re my new hero.

Yeah, I had an ex girl-friend who had a tattoo of a cute little mouse beneath her bikini line. It disappeared after a while. I suspect her pussy ate it.

What I don’t get about the whole “I got this tatt while I was drunk as shit on Spring Break” is that people are DUMB enough to go to a tattoo parlor that’ll ink them while they’re shitfaced. NO reputable artist will ink you while you’re out of your gourd.

Personally, I think it would be pretty funny to get this Bible verse tattoo:

When I think of fashions and hairstyles that were "must have"when I was younger I thank god that I never succumbed to the temptations of having a trendy tattoo myself, though I did have my blood group tattooed on my arm for practical reasons.

I think that people who have tats done when younger dont realise that as personalities they will grow, change and evolve as they get older, and who knows perhaps some of them dont.

It could be that they remain static as far as character development is concerned and remain as perpetual adolescents even when they are fat, bald and middle aged.

Good luck to them I say, its no reason for me to get wound up and it makes the world a slightly more interesting place.

Setting aside all considerations of how it will look someday, how meaningful it is or isn’t, trendiness, what-have-you: I don’t like tattoos because I find them ugly. They have all the aesthetic appeal of a scab.

Now a bad tattoo story: My sixteen year old stepdaughter got a tattoo about six months ago (lower back, natch). She and her boyfriend wanted to get each other’s names, but since they are so young, that would just be silly, right? Instead, they both got tattoos of the numbers which represent the letters of each other’s names, for example A=1, B=2, etc. She has a new boyfriend now.

I’m not at all concerned with what other people have as tattoos, but for myself, I would find it difficult to get one - not for the usual reasons (the “you’ll regret this” thing), but because I think that my tastes in the media clash with what I could realistically do.

The ink on skin in my opinion tends to work best in large designs that emphasize whole areas of the body, and designed as a whole - that is, with a plan from the start. Too many tattoos I find to be too sketchy and fussy - perhaps inevitable, as most people start with a little one somewhere, and work up from there, adding in stuff as they go. This gives the body somewhat the look of a sketchbook, with stuff in various styles and degrees of expertise intermingled.

[I’m also not much a fan of the small, hidden tattoo.]

Thus, in order to really look good, I think you’d have to have a whole-body plan in mind from the start, and have the whole thing done in the same style. Which is a major undertaking, requiring lots of planning and access to an artist - which is probably pretty expensive.

Just my aesthetic two cent’s worth.

This, on the other hand, makes you my new arch-nemesis. I’m sure you understand.

Who’s using peer pressure? I don’t like tattoos; I don’t think there is anyone on this thread (or on this board) who is running their lives according to MY opinion.
