The 2019 fitness and exercise thread

I set a new PR today.
I was able (barely, and with terrible form) to put up 3 plates/side on the Hammer Strength incline bench machine. I’ve been gunning for that for 3 years.

I did pigeon pose in yoga last week:

variant 2 in the above link, not the take-the-easy-way-out alternative 1

It’s been awhile since anyone has posted, so I’ll share two (minor) accomplishments.

  1. I can now do a 36” box jump pretty consistently.
  2. I did weighted dips with 100 lbs. today. Never did that much before. Of course, my buddy did 225 (5 plates), which made him look like Harrison Bergeron.

My last five runs have been in three countries & three states.

I’ve never had quite that variety in five runs, but the times I’ve done similar, I like to think my GPS watch is saying “WTF…” as it connects.

This was my first 10+ mile running week in about 3 years. Weight is slowly but steadily coming off, down about 15 lbs from the start of the year. Got a couple long swims in to mix things up.

Started biking to work. About 15 miles round trip. I like everything about it. Hoping to do it twice a week, as it does eat into family time.

Well, the day is almost here. My race (103K, to be exact) is tomorrow. I head up there tonight, sleep in a tent, get up at 3:30 am to catch the shuttle to the start line, then run for about 15 hours.

And I still haven’t figured out what I was thinking.

damn, Troutman, that sounds like a hell of a thing. Good luck.

I’m back on my very low calorie diet. I’ve been feeling ok, but this morning I’m super tired. I need to go to the gym anyway, but I think I’ll put it off for an hour and see if the caffeine kicks in.

You’ve got this, TroutMan! I’ve run one 50K and I volunteer at several ultras including my annual 100 miler where my stint is 30 hours long. I think you know all you need to know, but a common theme I see with successful finishers is that they are having fun, even if they are miserable. Do you have a pacer for the last sections? That can help a HUGE amount. Take you time at the aid stations, let the volunteers take care of you. Eat what and when you can, walk when you need to.

Thanks. No pacers allowed in this race, but I’m a pretty solitary runner anyway. I’m sure I’ll end up running with other people for some parts, so I can tag on their coattails if my motivation is flagging.

I like your observation about having fun. The 50K I ran in May was probably the most fun I’ve had in a race of any length. The slower pace, the camaraderie among the runners, the scenery, and the walking breaks without guilt are all nice parts. Sore legs is a type of pain that I can enjoy pushing through. But it’s miserable when you hit the lactate threshold and your cardio system is reaching the limit, and that doesn’t typically happen in an ultra.

And as a volunteer, I always have a bottle of Fireball, which is amazingly effective at 3:00 AM.

I want to run in your race.

I’m jealous; I had an ultra on the schedule for the weekend but an injury kiboshed that. Finally mended from that & now I’ve got something else in the other leg. :frowning:

I used to do an 8½ mile looped 24-hr race. One of the ‘water’ stops (6½ in) was manned by a ‘beer runners’ group & always had a pony keg there. I’d only allow myself to partake in the last lap. I wanted one earlier but alcohol is a depressant & I was already exhausted & fighting to stay upright.

I had double-bypass heart surgery last March. Following that, I did a 12-week cardio rehab program at the hospital. This basically consisted of an hour workout 3 days a week on the treadmill or exercise bike while my heart was being monitored and my blood pressure taken before, during, and after the workout. Once that stint was over, I was pronounced fit to exercise on my own. The rehab folks suggested an hour walk every other day.

Since then, I’ve been walking an hour each day if possible. I set my timer for 30 minutes and head in whatever direction I feel like going. When the timer goes off, I turn around and walk back home, listening to a podcast the entire hour.

While I can manage this walk in the heat, I realized that once the cold weather set in, I wouldn’t be able to do it. So earlier this week I joined the local Y. I’ve been doing my hour now on a treadmill there or on the walking track. And this morning I participated in a beginning Yoga class. It kicked my butt, but I think I’ll try to do it once a week, as well as walk seven days a week.

The doctors recommended that my grandmother walk 2 miles a day. It’s been 3 weeks now and we have no idea where she is.

I’ve noticed a look of disappointment on my wife’s face each time I return from my daily walk.

Ran the full Reservoir Loop (6 miles) that I haven’t run in 5 years, felt good if slow. Nice to get back in the groove.

I joined a gym 6 months ago, but I have only put on weight. Maybe I should drop in there and see what’s going on.

I was feeling pretty good today, so I tried weighted triceps dips with 100 lbs, and got two decent reps.
That’s as much weight as I have ever done - I’m going to try 105 next time and see if I can set a new P.R.
