The 2020 fitness and exercise thread

So, it’s already February, and nobody has started a new thread, so here goes…

I just finished my 5th Ragnar Relay. As usual I was slow AF, but marginally faster than in past years, even with my right hip giving me trouble.
I’m registered for the Spartan Super later this month, and that could really be brutal.

Because of my new job, I’ve not been able to get to the gym as consistently as I did before. I’m going when I can, about 2-3 times a week, but sometimes work doesn’t allow it. I did Body Pump for the first time in about a week on Tuesday and wrenched a muscle in my back in the middle of the squat track. I’ve been taking it easy, heating pads and OTC pain meds, and it’s a lot better.

On the plus side, I am not stuck behind a desk all day, I’m walking a LOT more, and I’ve lost six pounds. I also have Invisalign, and it’s cut down on the snacking since it’s a pain to run to the restroom, pop out the liners, rinse them, eat the snack, go back to the bathroom, brush my teeth and the liners, and put them back in.

So no, I’m not training for a marathon or anything, just staying on track. I do have lovely definition in my shoulders and calves (calves probably because I started taking step class) and I’m in pretty good shape for someone in her 50s.

I did a Spartan Super in the desert (Laughlin, NV) back in November, and it’s really only as brutal as you make it. I did the non-competitive wave, walked portions of it, and didn’t do burpees if I didn’t complete an obstacle. My regular workouts were more brutal! (Of course, if you want to make it brutal, you absolutely can. And some annoying people like to get their panties in a twist if you skip the burpees. But I figure if you’re not competing and you paid for the race, you can do or not do whatever you feel like doing or not doing.)

I’ve manage to get back to the weight I was before the holidays, and with some warmer weather in the past two weeks I’ve even gotten some long runs in. I may run outside today, first time I’ve done two outside days in a row in the last 6 months.

Thanks for the reminder to get my gym membership up and running, lol. There’s one in walking distance of my new office, so I really have no excuse. I lost most all the weight I plan to in the last 2-3 years, but I’d really like to start lifting weights and getting a bit more toned.

I wish so badly all the snow and ice was gone. I LOVE going on long (like, the entire afternoon) walks from my apartment to downtown, just enjoying the warmth and playing Pokémon GO. It gives me some light exercise (I know walking doesn’t burn a lot - I said LIGHT exercise, lol), gets me some sun while raising my spirits, and keeps me out of the apartment and away from food (boredom snacking is how I hit 200 lbs to begin with).

It hit almost 40 degrees on Saturday so I did go out, but my fingers got cold sooner than I’d hoped, and there was more ice than I’d expected. Yesterday was definitely a better day, but I had a Superbowl party to attend and shopping to do for that, so no time for a walk.

May summer come quickly!..

Congratulations!

I’m training for the Publix Atlanta Marathon, which will be held in conjunction with and the day after the US Olympic Marathon Trials. Looking forward to that - I’m volunteering as a course marshal for the trials, so I get a front-row seat to watch the best runners in the country. And next day, be ecstatic if it only takes me twice as long to run the same distance.

I ended last year the very same way I started it - laid up with an overuse injury, which kept me from my goal of “running the year” (that is. 2,019 miles in 2019). But my legs are solid and injury-free now, so I’m hoping for a good year of training and racing.

I haven’t done a whole lot. And there’s nothing in my future that I’ve signed up for. I don’t seem to be behind the amount I swam last year at this point in time, but I feel like I haven’t been going to the pool much. Maybe I should sign up for something to actually have a goal.

I ran in the Spartan Super today.
It was shorter than in past years - only 6.53 miles, which was nice. Once again, I missed the rope climb, but this time, only by a finger. I’ll get it next time.
My time as greatly improved from last year, but still super slow.
Oh, and - I’m sore.

I am seriously thinking of looking in into Aquafit classes. I’m not trying to snark, and I know how lame that sounds, but that’s where I am right now. Wish me luck!

After gaining about 10kg since running a half marathon 4 years ago its time to lose some weight
Started running again about 3 weeks back.
Slowly building up distance and speed on a “3 on, 1 off” schedule.
last night was 2km running non stop for 4.2km in 30 minutes, followed by a 3.5km walk.

Looking for a good (free) C25k app since Runkeeper have started charging for their training programmes

Training to complete the Bright Angel Trail again this spring. Have only done a few 40 mile days and it has already started to get warmer but at least I am going to try to run 15 miles every weekend before it gets too hot in the morning.

Last year I would have made it down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back except it was raining and then lightning struck on the trail in front of me and although I was more than 4/5 of the way there I took it as a sign I shouldn’t continue. But I still felt like I accomplished something having started running down completely alone at 4 am in the 40-something degree rain.

So I want to make damn sure I finish this time: I’ve booked 3 days at Flagstaff in case it is raining one of the days I can reschedule my run.

Not doing quite as much gym work as I would like. But I was pleased to lift a 500 pound (trap bar) deadlift the other day. From a 2” platform deficit as well. Best lift in ages, and pretty close to my record. I don’t think I’m going to equal my bench and squat records from over a decade ago, and have largely moved on to prioritize volume and other lifts. So I enjoyed a blast from the past.

there is nothing lame about that, it is a great way to move a body. My partner does classes, I like to swim laps and do my own thing with foam dumbbells but it is great to see the class folks come in to the centre, they always look happy about it.

I am trying to stave off the inevitable decline to come with serious lung disease so I try to move as much as possible, I have a pretty good gym set up at home, I get to the pool a few times a week and haven’t failed to get over 10000 steps a day in years now

And boy am I tired (boom boom)

I’ll never run a race but I don’t need to, I just need to keep ticking over. I was far more disabled with my COPD a decade ago than I am today, it usually doesn’t work that way. I have just added 100 squats a day for a challenge, I’m feeling it.

Echoing Thylacine and saying there’s nothing lame about it. Everybody starts somewhere, and aquafit is a great place to do it. It’s no- to low-impact exercise, and the resistance of the water does make you work, probably more than you think. I hope you enjoy it

I’ve been having awful stomach aches, which the VA has declared “not emergent.” For some reason, I decided to try Asian cooking.

I made a spicy chicken stir fry with lots of red pepper and ginger and garlic.

My stomach stopped hurting. In fact, it was blissful.

Been cooking Asian recipes for a few months. Went to the VA. Was startled to find I’d lost twenty pounds. Gone through a whole container of red pepper in a few months, along with a same sized thing of ginger.

I bought a new house year before last because the street in front of my old house was boom cars 24/7. Bought a duplex in a small town and it’s possible to walk everywhere. There’s bike trails and apple trees everywhere----including my yard.

I cannot describe how wonderful it is to ride your bike down the street and hear only birds. I did get yelled at by a very irate chipmunk, though. There’s also a very nice Y *with a pool. *

You can walk everywhere you need to go. It’s amazing how good that feels. Plus, did I mention a duplex with fireplaces, four bedrooms each, built ins, servants’ quarters, three porches, and apple, plum, and cherry trees? I’m going to be donating apples, cherries, and plums to the food shelf next year. Maybe it’s possible to ride a bike there.

Oh, and I’ve seen a moose and a wolf too.

My weight and health convinced me I needed to do something, and my mom convinced me to try My Fitness Pal (AKA My Fitness Nag.) I am counting calories, and doing something active at least 4 times a week. Rarely intense, because I live on the second floor, but chair yoga or a chair workout, and going to the fitness center when I have time and gas money. First week 5 pounds, week 2 nothing. (Who plateaus on week 2?!) I adjusted the calorie count to lower than MFP suggested, and will see how that works.
Mr Celtic Knot has a new job as a school custodian, and walks 3 miles to work. I pick him up because we don’t want him walking home a 11 pm on a country road with no sidewalks. If only I could persuade him to be more cautious with portion sizes and food choices.
The impetus was that I saw my family at Christmas, and might be able to see my parents in June. I’d love to shed at least 30 pounds by then. I’d also love to be able to buy a comfortable bra.

Thanks for the kind thoughts! The low impact is particularly attractive, as I stopped doing jujutsu a few years ago when my slowing reflexes meant I was breaking falls with my face and beating the mat a second later…

Well I had been dragging my feet getting back to it.

Then I spent 5 hours today demolishing an 8" thick concrete patio with an electric breaker.

Since my whole damn body is going to be sore because of this, I gotta I’ll go ahead and use it as a jumping off point for workout year 2020.

Starting the first of the year I’ve been riding the exercise bike daily, twenty-five minutes a night at first and then raising that to forty-five minutes a night within a week or so. I do not bike particularly hard, thought it’s enough to break a sweat and get my heart rate up.

It has has no physical effect on me whatsoever. I do not feel better and am not getting more fit and am not losing weight. I do not expect this to change.
