I have never before heard of snowboard cross. What a great spectator sport! I hope to see it in the future.
If you did not check out Snowboard Cross Mixed Team event, you should. Cut to about an hour in to get to the Big Final, which consists of one female race and then one male race.
It was one of the most thrilling moments of the Olympics so far. My whole family was cheering and yelling to the end.
Don’t worry - it has been around since 2006, and it’s not going away any time soon.
Didn’t you see any of the numerous mentions of what happened at the first Olympics women’s snowcross final? Lindsey Jacobellis had the lead going into the next-to-last jump, but, for some strange reason, decided to attempt a “method” and ended up falling and finishing second. (I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if, at least in part, she did it as a protest against the IOC for deciding to let the organization that runs international skiing events run the Olympic snowboarding instead of the group that ran the events at, for example, the X-Games.)
nope. or if I heard any, I didn’t notice. I just watched the last few heats of the mixed pairs event. But it was a lot of fun.
Snowcross is a great sport, easily the best of the newfangled additions. A nice break from endless half pipe coverage.
Yeah, I find myself curiously unmoved by the half pipe. I’m sure that stuff is hard, and it sure looks scary, but I have no idea which are harder than others or why. It’s funny, because I really like figure skating and gymnastics, both of which seem similar. But somehow, I have a better sense of what’s going on with both of those, and as a result, enjoy them a lot more.
I don’t really love the ski jumps, either.
I do love alpine skiing.
Same here. All the runs pretty much look the same after a while. Hey, Look! Dude went up the wall, and did a few turn thingys! Hey, now he did it again on the other side! Snooze-fest.
RE: Snowboard Cross. No worries if you missed it. It’s being replayed right now for at least the fourth time. Like there’s nothing else happening in the country of China.
I’ve been mostly watching events on demand. So i can watch anything anytime.
She redeemed herself in the singles event, but then she did another “cool move” in the mixed race when she crossed the line. It didn’t cost them the gold medal, but I really wish she wouldn’t have done it.
Oh, is that what that was about. The announcer did mention something.
Well, it’s about Official. I cannot watch any more Olympics unless I DVR it to skip the commercials. I’ve seen every one, so many Goddamn times, they are driving me out of my tiny fragile mind. I’m losing it.
Huh? I didn’t see that. Not like I didn’t get the opportunity.
I kinda like the one with Walter.
I agree/ It’s a lot more exciting than the standard ski races, where one person goes down the mountain, they record the time, rinse and repeat…
Monobob looks like fun.
This probably isn’t news to most people, but this is the first Olympics that I wondered about how many countries send athletes, and which countries. American TV coverage is so slanted to either the top contenders, or the Americans. You never hear about the others. There is a Wikipedia page!
I did not know there are even a few African nations competing. When I think of winter sports, Africa is pretty far down on the list of places. But sure enough!
A lot of countries send only one athlete. And it’s almost always for Alpine Skiing.
Here’s to all the small teams. I may not get to see you, but this year I’m thinking about you.
I used to feel that way, but then I learned the many of the athletes representing those nations have very tenuous ties to them and are basically using a loophole to get to the Olympics
The Chinese men’s hockey team has 11 Canadians,3 Americans and a Russian (and 9 Chinese) They bent the rules somewhat so that the host coountry could have a competitive team.
Yes, the case from the 2018 Olympics is a very good example of that:
