The 49 wonders of the 7 parts of the world

Seven wonders of the world might have been enough when the World consisted of a couple of huts scattered around the Mediterranean and nobody knew what a continent was. Not any more.

I say we need seven wonders for each continent. (Well, I’m bundling Antarctica in with Polynesia and other insular places.) Seven each for Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, N America, S America and Oceania — but here’s the kicker. We’re not going to distinguish between natural and man-made. Seven per continent, that’s all you get, too bad, fuck you, just seven.

What’s a wonder? Well, it’d better be pretty damn impressive, first off. Second, it’d better be fairly iconic and unusual. Third, it’d better be something lasting that you can feel (unlike, say, “Halle Berry’s breasts”* or “the Internet” or “breaking the sound barrier”).

Here’s what I have so far:

Africa-Middle East: the Sphinx, Petra.

Asia: the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China.

Australasia: Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House.

Europe: Stonehenge, the Colosseum.

N America: the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Devil’s Tower, the Statue of Liberty.

S America: Angel Falls, Machu Picchu.

Oceania: the Marianas Trench, Easter Island.

*Well, I’m not allowed to.

N. America Niagra Falls
S. America Nazca Lines
Asia Angor What (spelling is not my strong suit, sorry)
Europe Hadrian’s Wall

Thats all I got.

I’d add Iguazu Falls for South America and Victoria Falls for Africa.

The pyramids in Egypt have to be on any short list for Africa.

North America: New York City subways
South America: Amazon River/flooded forest
Europe: the Chunnel
Asia: Emperor Qín Shǐhuáng Líng’s tomb
Africa: Okavango delta

Africa: Pyramids/Sphinx (they’re in the same place), Ngorongoro Crater, Victoria Falls/Zambezi River, Murchison Falls, Okavongo Delta, Dogon Cliffs, Karnak Temple

Asia: Angor Wat, Great Wall of China, Great Buddha at Kamakura, The Forbidden City, Mt. Fuji, Taj Mahal, The Himalayas

North America: Denali, Crater Lake, Grand Canyon, C&O Canal, Mt. Rushmore, Erie Canal, Slot Canyons of the Southwest

South/Central America: Machu Pichu, Mayan Ruins, Angel Falls, Amazon River, Panama Canal

Europe: Stonehenge, Colosseum, Blue Mosque, The Acropolis, Charles Bridge (Prague), Notre Dame, Sistine Chapel; seven doesn’t begin to cover it.

Australia: Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock

It’s pretty much gone now, but I’d add the Three Gorges on the Yangtze for Asia.

For Australia/New Zealand, I’d like to toss in the Milford Sound.

For Europe add in the Parthenon in Athens.

Another popular one for Europe is the Alhambra. Maybe we can count “historic Rome” as one and that kills several dozen birds with one stone

Africa- The Great Mosque at Djenne, Timbuktu

Asia- The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Hampi (India), The Golden Temple

For North America, perhaps the Hoover Dam.

How is the Statue of Liberty a Wonder. Gift from the French? Yes. Iconic? Yes. Wonder? Not so much.

Djenne and Timbuktu are 200 miles apart. Both are in Mali, however.

Europe - The Colosseum, The Akropolis, The Alhambra, The Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, The Kremlin, The Matterhorn

N. America - Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite, Empire State Building, Chichennitza, Disneyworld

S. America/C. America - Angel Falls, The Amazon, Macchu Pichu, Mazca Lines, (Whatever the name of those falls are that the guy went over while crucified in that movie…you know what I mean…), Rio de Janerio (Statue of Jesus on the Hill), Tikal

Asia - Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Patronus Towers, Mt. Fuji, Angkor Wat, Mt. Everest, The Hagia Sophia (Istanbul - that IS on the Asia side, right?)

Australia/Oceania - Ayres Rock, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House, (I’m at a loss here - 4,5,6,7 can be Elle McPherson’s and Rachel Hunter’s left and right breasts)

Wargamer, the falls are Iguazu and the statue is on Corcovado Mountain aka Pao de Azucar Mt (I know I’m misspelling it, it means “sugarbread”), so often called Corcovado as well. You’re welcome

Istanbul sits on both continents, divided by the Bosphorus Straits. Most of the mosques worth talking about are on the European side.

N. America: Niagra Falls
C. America: Blue Hole

I agree. It’s purty but there are numerous structures in the continent that are more impressive- ESB, Chrysler, GG Bridge (or really, the Bay Bridge), CN Tower, Sears Tower or Hancock…

North America: Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, Library of Congress, the Interstate system, The World Trade Towers (You didn’t say they had to still exist).

The English name for that mountain is Sugarloaf Mountain.

I just don’t think the Chrysler Building or the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam has the same oomph as a Wonder as the Statue of Liberty.

We’ve built dozens of similar dams, hundreds of skyscrapers, thousands of bridges. They represented the pinnacle of the craft in their time, but building them was the end result of many years of tinkering.

How many similar bigass statues are there to the Statue of Liberty? How many bigass walls are there to compare to the Great Wall of China? How many Colosseums did the Romans ever build on a similar scale?
