The 8th Annual Steelers March to the Super Bowl Thread

And where was the helmet-to-helmet flag on that hit? Harrison will probably get fined for that.

What horseshit. That was so clearly a penalty. But hey, not when it’s a Steeler getting hit, apparently. Only when they hit someone else is it worth a flag.

Ho-lee fuck! That is criminal to not call a penalty there.

Totally fair non-call!
No, really, I’ll concede the NFL is persuing some vendetta against you the last few games.

I’m not sure if you’re kidding or not. Please make it clear.

I’m having a little fantasy of Dan Rooney clocking Goddell in the jaw with a smooth uppercut.

I could give a rat’s ass about Ben’s nose but that hit on Miller was ludicrous.

The first part was just to see if heads would asplode. The second part is serious.
Perhaps this is an end to the special relationship between the refs and and the Steelers? Doubt it - this feels more like a lovers’ spat.

Or maybe it was stupid to claim that there ever was one.

What the hell was that third down pass attempt? Who the fuck would ever expect that to work on third and goal from the five or six? Jesus Christ.

Oh right. Asserting bias in favor is just absurd! The officials wouldn’t conspire like that.

But bias against… well of course!

Can you show any evidence? Oh, I remember. All the data goes completely and wholly against your assertion, and now you are acknowledging bias against the Steelers.

You have the convenience of having your evidence having occured just now. How would you suggest I go about it? Somehow collect the games over the last few years, comb through them, and then give times of plays for games you probably don’t have footage of?

Cute that you’re going away from your “why would the refs conspire for/against anyone? That’s ridiculous!” defense.

Or you could do what I did previously and look at the fucking data. Look at which teams were among the most and least penalized in the league. If you can’t come back and show me that the Steelers were among the least penalized teams in the league, you ought to shut up. Of course, actual evidence is irrelevant to you.

And now the real drama begins. Can the Steelers hold? They couldn’t under the same circumstances in week 4.

Already debunked that. It makes the assumption that all teams commit penalties at the exact same rate and therefore an average rate of penalties proves lack of bias. But what if the team actually commits more than the average number of penalties? The having them dead-center average in penalties called would appear unbiased but would be an injustice.

There’s also an issue of timing - you got like 15 penalties in that Oakland in a game you were never in danger of losing. Those count for 15 times as much as one game changing penalty, yet did not even collectively matter a fraction as much.

I thought there was no way that our secondary could keep them out of field goal range.

Unbelievable!

1st PLACE, BABY!

Better lucky than good, I guess. And Polamalu, Roethlisberger and Harrison were good tonight so I’ll take luck.

Any debunking that starts with “what if” is not much of a debunking. I’m assuming nothing - just pointing to the fact that the Steelers have been among the most penalized teams in the league. You can fantasize all you want, but ultimately all you’ve got is ignorant hate-wank - which actually summarizes your football knowledge pretty succinctly.

Really? So if I rephrase the point not to be in rhetorical form, which is easy enough to do, suddenly the same point has more credibility?

My point is valid - the number of penalties a team has received does not conclusive indicate if they’re being under or over punished unless you can compare it to the number of penalties they are actually committing and should be punished for. Obviously that’s a harder number to quantify, but to ignore it leads to erroneous conclusions.

Oh please, bullshit. Your point is that since the Steelers get penalized a lot, obviously they’re not being given slack by the officials. But this doesn’t address the issue of how many penalties they actually deserve and/or when the penalties come. I’m guessing you’d trade all 15 (or whatever) penalties against the Raiders when you were up 3 scores than that one penalty of Hasselbeck getting an illegal block in the 05 superbowl.

Yep, just keep repeating that mantra over and over again, no matter how little it makes sense.

If I’m basing my sense of fairness of officiating based on my hatred for a team, why don’t I think the Ravens, who I hate far more than the Steelers, get special treatment? I also thought the Colts got special treatment when I liked them, and I still do now that I hate them.

Why would I admit right here in this thread that the refs are obviously punishing the Steelers unfairly to make some sort of point? You discount the possibility that I could be right based on what you think my motivations are, which is actually an indication of your bias rather than mine.

I was watching the game and the play where Ben had his nose screwed up didn’t look at all bad in real time, so I don’t really blame the officials for that one. You only even notice hand to face contact if you’re looking for it, and it looks incidental and not too hard.

The non-call on the hit to Heath Miller, on the other hand, in light of what they’ve been calling all season, is just bullshit.
