The 93rd Indiianapolis 500

Any other race fans?

I’ll start out with a big F-you to Marco Andretti. Yes, it wasn’t his fault, but his childish name calling is bad sportsmanship, and is characteristic of his arrogant sense of entitlement. IMHO, he’s well out of the race.

Let’s hope the rest of the race goes better.

Anyone else feel sorry for Alex Lloyd in that pink race suit and car?

I’m rooting for TK, Danica, or Oriol.

I was looking for an Indy thread. I’m watching while hanging out online. I was a regular Indy watcher for many years, but gave up after the big split in 1996. For some reason, I started thinking about it again this year, and learned that the split ended last year. So I’m back, but at this point I don’t know a lot about the drivers or teams. Of course it helps that they all seem to be related to people I watched back in the 80’s.

Part of me is rooting for Danica, but she’s kind of a jerk. I think if she wasn’t a woman, I wouldn’t like her at all. I much prefer Sarah Fisher, although I don’t think she has a shot at winning.

Danica’s probably done more for IndyCar and open wheel racing than anyone else in a decade or more. She’s brought auto racing to the attention of women and young girls in a way that her predecessors – Sarah Fisher, Lynn St. James – never did, AFAIK. (I wasn’t following racing when Janet Guthrie was driving, so I don’t know if she had a similar impact.)

That said, like Marco, Danica is rather hot headed and has not always been a good sport.

Of course, from what I’ve seen, very few young athletes have learned the lessons of good sportsmanship. It’s rare to hear anyone say a good word about a fellow competitor anymore.

Well Danica’s worked her way up to fifth now, which is pretty exciting. I agree that her attitude is not at all unusual among the young drivers. I’d just rather root for someone who seemed more likable. Also, her sex sells commercials for a web hosting company are really turning me off.

All that aside, Go Danica!

I was rooting for Doorknobs, but I think he’s out of it.

Damn. Tony’s out. But at least he’s okay.

I have to say I like Danica a little better after hearing her on the radio talking about Tony and apologizing for her pit mistake. Of course now she’s dropped back anyway.

She has always been good about admitting her own mistakes.

Matos walked away, but Meira looks hurt. I hope it’s not too bad.

It’s a shame, because Matos had a chance of being at the front at the end, because of clever fuel strategy. But a rookie mistake cost him.

Well, that was okay. Third place for Danica, but everyone else I was rooting for was out too early.
