The *A Knight's Tale* Appreciation Thread

Just what the title says.
My favourite things:

Heath Ledger. All right, he’s not the most brilliant actor on the planet, but he’s suntanned, blond, and tall, with big brown puppy eyes and a big white smile. And he sings!

Paul Bettany. Skinny, pale, white-blond–and gorgeous. Loved his bombastic, flamboyant character with its streak of vulnerability.

Rufus Sewell. As mentioned in the other thread, mrrrowr. That man is sex walking on legs.

The girl servant (can’t remember her name), she was a cute little thing.

So? How about it, guys?

A wonderful movie. I wasn’t expecting much from it, but ended up thoroughly enjoying it. Paul Bettany was brilliant. I also thought the commentary on the DVD was quite good.

Bérénice Bejo, cute but I prefered Laura Fraser .

I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of medieval and modern. Peasants and knights doing the “stomp, stomp, clap” to Queen’s We Will Rock You for example.

I also appreciated the comparisons between Edward and William, revealing the humility in the royal and the nobilty in the commoner, and the loyalty and courage in them both.

And I just love Mark Addy!

What cckerberos said. It’s insanely cheesy, but really fun. I absolutely fell in love with Paul Bettany in this movie! I haven’t listened to the commentary yet (I usually don’t) but may have to.

How would you beat him? With a stick, while he slept.

I’m in favor of anyone named Rufus.

I absolutely loved the bizarre soundtrack. I couldn’t help but giggle every time a new song came up, like “Lowrider”.

I also absolutely loved the fact that there was a medieval London Eye in the background of London. Absolutely brilliant!

?! Servant girl?

Do you mean the professional armourer, who developed the new trademarked high-tech alloy suit, played by Laura Fraser?

Laura Fraser …

Oh, yeah, those 3 stooges-type guys who where hanging out with her, they were pretty funny. Always whacking each other and hamming it up.

Knight’s Tale gets the award for Best Use of David Bowie In A Medieval Screenplay. Yeah, Lowrider, too.

Well, not to repeat myself,

“You have been weighed. You have been measured. And you have been found wanting.”

Ademar, “I, myself, have never been unhorsed.”
Jocelyn, “Nor have I.”

“Bed him well, my lady. Bed him well.”

Plus a few more I thought of:

“It’s called a lance…Hello!”

“There she is, William, the love of your life, the sun in your sky,” (paraphrased)
“And how I hate her.”

“I want poetry, Sir Auric,”
“Your breasts…are below your throat.”

“And did he follow his feet home?”

Then there’s Geoff’s whole WWF-type introduction for William, that I won’t attempt to recreate here.

Sometimes a movie is so shamelessly anachronistic it can pull it off. This one did, in spades.

 Can you explain? I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

In London, there’s a giant ferris wheel type thing called the London Eye right on the bank of the Thames. In one of the far shots of London in the movie, there was a medieval version of it; it’s way back in the background (a matte painting, I’m sure) so I thought it was pretty funny that they’d included it as a little extra detail.

I’ll have to look for that…it is pretty clever of them to include that.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town…

I’ve always been a fan of this movie. I like how much fun it has with itself, and I adore Paul Bettany!

Im my answer (#3 above), I took it to mean the lady-in-waiting, Christiana (since she’s the one who was doing all the runniing around). But I agree, I found the armourer much cuter. She must have appealed to my inner geek

Eh, both of them are cute.

Well I liked it; anachronistic movies are good (like Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet

I think Adhemar should have crushed Ulrich like an insect though. There’s nothing like seeing the aristocracy grinding their boots into the faces of the proletariat

And Edward, the Black Prince was cool too. If you have a nickname like “the Black Prince” you are pretty much cool by default.

Ah, the dueling … eye candy. So much to lust after, so … much time:D

Character conflict is lovely, but sometimes a guy just wants to sit and drool for an hour and a half, eh?

I loved this movie, except for the love interest, who had no appeal for me. All the other women were much more attractive and interesting.

Paul Bettany is a stud. After seeing this movie I consented to allow him to wed the love of my life, Jennifer Connelly.

I too absolutely loved this movie because it is 100% unadulterated fun. And that’s what I like in movies, not historical details or pure and seemless plotlines - FUN.

And this movie definitely gave me that.

Plus, the jousting scenes were cool.

Auric dumped a lot of men off their horses…did he sell the horses or keep them? Ademar made a point of explaining the rules to Jocelyn, and Auric must have arrived in England a fairly wealthy young man.
