The A2Z Movie Hall of Fame

Another survey thread here. Let’s have a poll on the twenty six great movies that start with each letter of the alphabet. You can pick movies you feel are great classics or go with personal favorites. You can submit your own selections or vote with the suggestions of others. You can vote for all twenty six letters or pick whichever ones you want. You can’t vote for more than one movie per letter but you can change your mind; just post your new choice to replace your original one.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
Blazing Saddles
Casablanca
Dogma
Exotica
Fargo
The Godfather
High Noon
It’s a Wonderful Life
Jumanji
King Kong
The Lion in Winter

Pulp Fiction
Quadrophenia
Raging Bull
7 Faces of Dr. Lao
12 Monkeys
Unforgiven
Victor/Victoria
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Yellow Submarine
Zelig

Note: I didn’t submit a choice for the letter “x”. The only two movies I could remember seeing that started with that letter were Xanadu and The X-Files, neither of which I liked. I was tempted to go with X-Men figuring any movie which had Rebecca Romijn running around in latex had to have some worth, but I couldn’t bring myself to vote for a movie I hadn’t seen.

Bite the bullet, rent Xanadu. Hit the mute button whenever a song comes on, and you’ve got a pretty good movie. Okay, not great, but it’s still better than X-Men.

Since some of you might consider my selections a desecration against the integrity of movies, I refer you to this post where I explain the criteria upon which I base my “expert” movie analyses. In brief, artistic considerations are not as important to me as entertainment value. Hence, my less than stellar (quasi-stellar?) choices. Having cleared that up I present to you my list:

Anaconda–yeah, right. Not even Jennifer López’ ass could save that fuck-up.

Now to the real list:

Armageddon–thanks for saving our butts, Bruce Willis. BTW, Rockhound rocks!
Back to the future–the space-time continuum will never be the same.
Crimson Tide–what was the name of Gene Hackman’s dog?
Die Hard–Yipeee kayeyy Motherfucker! Once again, Bruce Willis saves the day.
Executive Decision–yes, the one “starring” Steven Seagal.
Field of Dreams–Sure, Shoeless Joe was a leftie, not a rightie, but who gives a rat’s ass? We are talking about the best baseball movie ever here. Definitely one of the exclusive members of my Triumvirate of Cinematic Gems.
Good Will Hunting–profound and introspective analysis of physiological conflicts afflicting a supremely intelligent dudester. Had they not cast Minnie Driver it would have been even better.
Hearts and Souls–heart touching, soul-searching motivating study about appreciating life and enjoying it to the fullest. Life is ephemeral, opportunities scarce, you better make the best of them while you still can. Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t pay attention it might pass you by…Wait a minute, did I just quote Ferris Bueller? Oh, well…
Independence Day–Earthlings of the world unite…so we can kick some serious alien ass! You know, movies are truly magical. How else could you possibly fathom an elusive and utopian scenario where the human race rallies together under a scheme of fraternity and cooperation? Only in Hollywood.
Jurassic Park–what could be better than cloning dinos? Oh yeah, cloning farting dinos. Gotta get myself one of those damn velociraptors. Those are some pretty smart lizards.
I Know what you did last summer–now, if Jennifer had dropped the towel she had wrapped around her spectacular anatomy, I know pretty well what I would have done.
Lethal Weapon–probably should have selected “The Last Boy Scout” but it would have been the third Bruce Willis movie mentioned here. I mean, he is not that good of an actor, right? I had no other option but to “settle” for this one. Not that it doesn’t deserve the mention, Mel Gibson is funny as hell as Martin Riggs.
Matrix, The–Superlative. Sits alongside God in Movie Heaven.
Nothing Hill–one of the best romantic comedies ever. I even liked Julia Roberts’ character. Now, that truly says it all.
Overboard–Kurt Russell made this movie. Made me laugh my ass off.
Princess Bride, The–My name is Iñigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die. ’Nuff said.
Quo Vadis? The Quest?–somehow I haven’t watched movies under the Q file. The closest I came to viewing anything related to that letter was James Bond. So, in honor of the recently deceased Q–Desmond Llewelyn–I postulate The World is not enough.
Raiders of the Lost Ark–had to fit Indy in here somewhere.
Star Wars–in this or any other galaxy, this movie rocks. Completes the triumvirate of greatest movies ever.
Top Gun–cool planes, great music, Kelly McGilis and Meg Ryan .Oh yeah, Maverick is cool too.
Undersiege–were those really Erika Eleniak’s breasts?
Victory–I liked it a lot, but should have been able to come with something better.
War Games–Mathew Broderick’s movies were so cool back in the 80’s. Loved Ferris Bueller too.
X-men–Oh, Halle Berry! Hey, wait a minute, how come there wasn’t a mutant who could claim absolute control of farts as his primary mutant power?
Y–Y can’t I think of any movie that fits this category?
Z–ZZZZZ-ZZZZZ. Opps! Sorry, I was taking a nap. Anyway, I don’t like this letter and refuse to watch any movies starting with it.

Much to my dismay these all time greats had to be obviated
Beverly Hills Cop
The man in the Iron Mask
The Rock
Speed
Stargate

Confession
I have to admit I cheated a little bit. After reading some of the previous posts I changed:
Jerry McFuckin’ Guire for Jurassic Park
Point Break for The Princess Bride

BTW, Kilt I must praise your movie taste. You have some really nice selections on that list of yours.

Did I just post this?

In the hope of getting some more responses I’ve crossposted this on the F3 board.

Quasar, I’m throwing out I Know What You Did Last Summer and The World is Not Enough because they don’t start with the letter you claim they do. Kilt-wearin’, I also threw out Troops and Wallace and Grommit. For what it’s worth, I personally enjoyed all four nominees, but as Mason said to Dixon “You’ve got to draw the line somewhere.”

The I know what you did last summer and The World is not Enough inclusions were meant as jokes. I apologize for my lack of seriousness.

::Goes to an isolated corner to shamefully reflect on what he did::

Since I need to make up for that I hereby present my real proposals for K and Q:

Kundun: the life of a Buddhist monk; now, that is an exciting way to spend your existence.
Quick and the dead, The: great western. Includes Sharon Stone when she used to be hot. No matter that she didn’t get naked, she has done that so many times I don’t have to see her actual stuff to adequately visualize it in my mind.

I previously wrote:

Well, I just did:

You’ve got mail: which leads me to wonder: Could I have met a doper IRL without actually knowing who he/she was?

I also had a problem coming up with a decent Z-based movie:

In retrospect, that is a very narrow minded attitude so I will give it a shot. But before I do let me stress the fact that I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I have a hunch I will like it. I have an infallible Sixth Sense that allows me to know in advance whether I will like a flick or not. So my vote goes for:

Zero Effect: yes, I happen to like Bill Pullman movies. ID4, While you were sleeping, Casper, to name a few. Extrapolating from that I should enjoy this one.

One final note, Little Nemo:

Can I make a change on one of my previous selections? I can not believe I forgot about Outbreak, one of my favorites movies of all time. It makes Overboard seem like a huge piece of crap, make that a hysterically funny piece of crap. Since I seem to be providing absurd commentaries to “justify” my nominations, allow me to comment a bit on it.

Outbreak: that monkey was a great actor. He should have won an Oscar for best animal characterization. Besides the monkey’s obvious histrionic abilities, Rene Russo’s display of feminine beauty is also worth mentioning.

Okay, if we don’t get a big Monday rush of votes, I’m going to close the polls and start declaring winners.

Quasar, no problem with the late entries. In fact, I’m changing one of mine as well; a conversation today reminded me of the movie Quest for Fire, so Quadrophenia’s out.For what it’s worth, I have seen The Zero Effect and it’s a good movie, although I’m more a fan of Ben Stiller than Bill Pullman.

OrcaChow, your zeal is inspirational. I now know how JFK felt when he got the Illinois returns.
