You seem to be putting a lot of effort into not understanding this. Good luck with that.
It sounds like the hearing ended without Judge Cannon deciding anything. Delay tactic!
I thought there was an effort to phase the very word “master” out of the English language. Like renaming the master cylinders in cars. Or maybe it wasn’t a serious campaign; it’s hard to tell nowadays.
I like the sound of “special mistress” myself.
They have a thing here called a ‘taxing master’ in civil litigation who is supposed to establish whether the legal fees submitted by the winning side to the losing side are justifiable and reasonable.
The only usage that has been phased out of which I am aware is for disc drives and that’s in the context of a slave drive and a master drive. I don’t think that master on its own is considered problematic.
Also the term “main bedroom/bathroom” in real estate. That’s replacing “master”.
Also also, the master/slave technology is fairly obsolete in computers, since SATA doesn’t require it and that has become ubiquitous. The terminology isn’t really needed if the technology isn’t used anymore.
Well, when it’s a 2 sided coin, and side 2 is “slave” the idea that “primary” and “secondary” might work better isn’t so weird. I don’t recall an effort to do away with the word “master”.
So, I guess you could say T’s team is “fishing” for this…
I’ll just stop now.
The adventures of He-Mango and the Masters of the MAGAverse?
I heard on the news radio that the special master has been approved, but I don’t see it reported elsewhere. I was going to post a link.
ETA: Got one.
Have we established why she has jurisdiction? Seems really fishy…
This is such fucking bullshit.
So, supposedly trump can’t pick his own judge, it’s a random assignment. Awfully convenient that he got this judge! What’s going on?
Why does this judge even have jurisdiction?
So, now it’s going to take 3000 years to find a suitable special master that supposedly trump is not allowed to choose.
And what do you want to bet me (not a real bet offer) that the special master will be allowed to take many years to flip through the documents AND investigate Hunter Biden’s laptop, too?
What I haven’t seen stated in any reporting is whether the judge is allowing Trump to assert executive privilege – which really would be jaw-dropping and wrong – or if her order merely allows the special master to review for attorney-client privilege documents, to which he is entitled and the DOJ has already discovered and set aside.
If the latter, then her order is simply a face-saving move and mostly a speed bump for DOJ.
If, however, she attributes Trump with having some bizarre entitlement to executive privilege, then I’d expect the DOJ to go to the mats on this ruling. As they should. For all our history, executive privilege attaches solely to the Executive, and Trump ain’t one anymore.
Does anyone have a link to the actual ruling? I’d sure like to read it.
ETA: Never mind. Just read the NY Times story. She went there. Wow. Be sure to thank the Federalist Society for this ruling.
MAGAts?
Who would want them?
“Bon Appétit, Herr Q…”
Can some law-talking person help with the context here? Reports I’m seeing say that this is really very unusual. And, the part about Executive Privilege really seems out there – that would be Biden’s call, not Trump’s, right?
Is this indicative of a very biased judge or an incompetent judge or something else?
Could easily be the trifecta
I don’t see how any of this can benefit him on an obstruction charge. LOCK HIM UP!
Until I see something `truly outragous, I’m going to assume she sees the gravity of the situation (searching a former president’s home) and wants to provide every procedural protection available so there is the utmost appearance of fairness. It’s not going to hurt anything or substantially slow things down, so give him what he wants and one less thing to bitch about. While this is “unusual,” it’s not unheard of. I’ve had two cases with special masters in the past 2 years.
Personally, I’d prefer if the gravity of the situation she saw was “apparent massive disregard for security of classified documents”.
If there was clear evidence that DOJ was harassing Trump for political reasons, then sure, “searching a former president’s house” is something to worry about. But DOJ has very carefully followed all the rules here, dotting i’s, crossing t’s, getting judicial OKs for everything they’ve done. Trump has already received more than his due as a former president vs private citizen.
