I’m still hoping the Speaker will be a nice lady from San Francisco.
Nah, I think Pelosi will probably want it.
I laughed.
I’m pretty sure she’s already embraced being a Nasty Woman.
Just heard on NPR – I think on This American Life – Neil Patrick Harris belting out a New Broadway-style song about the Agony of Paul Ryan. Awesome and hilarious! I’d provide a link, but I assume it won’t be available on their website until tomorrow at the soonest.

It’s an interesting dynamic. Their power, really only extends as far as stopping him from getting a majority of the new House. The Speaker needs to be elected by a majority of the House not a plurality. A Freedom caucus revolt would leave both parties unable to win the Speakership on a strictly partisan vote. Throwing things to an overall centrist that can get support across the aisle, and knows their position is based on that bipartisan support, isn’t in the Freedom Caucus members’ interests.
Ryan, on the other hand, doesn’t have much to lose. They want him gone. That’s now worse than his personal worst case if it goes into bipartisan wrangling. He can afford to play chicken.
Not true. As DSeid recently educated me in another thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=807291
The Speaker is elected by a majority of votes cast. If 400 reps abstain, 18 votes wins it.
To be sure there’s not a lot of sound reasons to abstain. OTOH, you could imagine the Freedom Caucus choosing to boycott the vote, which amounts to abstention. It wouldn’t be sound, but they’d love the brinksmanship of it.
See the linked thread for a lot more discussion of the possibilities along those lines.
Cool, thanks. I usually love threads he starts but missed that one. The difference between the majority of those voting for someone and an overall majority is one of the small details with huge impact.
Relying on half-truth and innuendo, he wants to forbid the Democratic candidate for President from receiving briefings. That is too stupid to be believed. Is he going to forbid such briefings if she wins? Does he imagine he has the authority to do that?
He’s asked the Director of Natl. Intelligence to not provide the briefings; he doesn’t seem to think he has the authority to forbid them himself.
Well at least Paul Ryan will never be President now. Instead of spending the next 4 hours as the leader of the opposition against President Clinton like he planed he’s stuck working with & defending President Trump. To run in 2020 he’d have to change an incumbent Trump or Pence by 2024 he’ll either be running against an incumbent Democrat or trying to sell America on a 3rd Republican term.
Sometimes you gotta look reeeeeal hard to find that pony under the pile of horseshit.
