The Alamo acquires Pee-Wee's bike for its new museum

The Alamo announced today that they have acquired the original stunt bike used in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure for their new visitor center and museum opening in 2027, where it will go on permanent display.

Obviously, given the lengths he went to to get his bike back, they had to get it over his dead body. (Too soon for that joke?)

“Tell 'em Large Marge sent ya!”

The delay is so they can dig a basement.

There is a big but…

The recent documentary showed that Rubens had an extensive collection of pop culture ephemera, enough to fill a museum on it’s own. It appears as if it’s being sold off piecemeal to private collectors. Too bad, it would’ve been neat to see it on display all in one place.

Among those who gave their collected items to the Alamo is the singer Phil Collins:

Then you could have told people that you were going to the museum to see the Rubens exhibit.

… With all the cool James Bond stuff!

Phil’s long-time love affair with Davy Crockett and The Alamo is a neat story. Acquiring his collection was a quite a feather in the museums’ [coonskin] cap, but it wasn’t without controversy.

This excerpt from “Forget The Alamo” goes into the story in some depth. Beyond the issue of just getting the museum built, there have been questions about the authenticity of some of the artifacts.

Apparently only 50 items from Phil’s collection will be on display, so I guess there must have been some judicial curation involved.

They build it already, but it was not because of the movie, it is for storage and other items under the gift shop.

They showed it to Pee-Wee himself in 2011:

I just finished the documentary about him last night. My wife had never seen the Pee Wee Herman Show, that aired on HBO in 1981 (it was filmed at the Roxy and included the original Groundlings cast), so we watched that.

Almost obligatory  :

I don’t need to see the museum.

I lived it.

Nice!
