The Amazing Race 10 - Ep. 2: "Can Horses Smell Fear?"

Hmm … obviously the title line for tonight’s episode will be uttered by someone who’s never seen Jerry Maguire, because as that adorable little tow-headed kid with the giant noggin informed us in that movie, “Dogs and bees can smell fear.”

Where are we off to for tonight’s episode? Judging from the scenery and the cute little Genghis-Khan-style fur-trimmed hats (which I think I remember from either a National Geographic documentary or that old reality show Lost) we’re going to Mongolia. Cool! Or maybe not. I don’t remember – did the previews say anything? And if we are going to Mongolia, will we meet Kublai Khan and build a stately pleasure dome for Phil?

According to the info from Yahoo! TV (which I will spoiler for the faint of heart, but I assure you, it does not contain any actual spoiler information):

The pressure mounts as teams must switch tasks mid-stream; several teams begin to form alliances.

And, I must mention that I look forward to the return of the Awesome Animal Task, although I regret that it might be too early for any oxen to be broken. Still, I am looking forward to tonight.

And to help entertain you whilst waiting for tonight’s episode with yet more Phil-y goodness, Carissa Gaghan is writing her column again this year.

Yay! God, I love that kid.

Why indeed, Carissa. She also lurves the same teams I do.

That kid is slick, I tell you whut. I kind of sometimes can’t believe how astute she is. I really wish I could watch the show with her.

LOVE the hats!

Peter is sooooo annoying. Why is he all therapist all the time?

I loved the “you use that, I’ll use my shoe” line. What? Do you really think your shoe will help you dip much water into the jug?

But I do feel sorry for anyone who gave up on the tent-folding task because they couldn’t figure out how to tie the knot.

Well, at least the non-roadblocking cheerleader knew better than to start cheering her teammate on.

Yes, Peter is annoying. I do liek Sarah’s spirit: “I’m not making judgments…but I’ll remember these things”, or however she put it.

Yes! And Phil’s outfit was hott. Good episode all around, I think. I loved that the Detour choices were not obvious – you could have made a good argument either way. The horseback riding looked like a lot of fun, and those oxey-things (what were they called, again?) looked neat-o. Apparently Peter and Sarah’s broken ox doesn’t like him any more than we do (I wonder if it’s because he’s an automaton?). Rob looks like John Leguizamo a little bit, but without the wit or personality. And that Roadblock was some cool-ass shit. Fire! Explosions! Awesome.

I counted at least four teams who claimed to be out of the race based on a momentary setback that they had suffered. This pessimism really makes them look like a bunch of whiny losers. (Of course, one of those teams ended up being right.)

I love the fact that the directions the cheerleaders got from the locals were wrong. Not because I didn’t like the cheerleaders, but because they were so sure they were going the right way at last and ended up on the other side of Mongolia.

And I find it unusual that a rural West Virginia man has never gone bowhunting. I know that it’s practically a sacrament in central PA.

I think it was “I’m not making judgments, but I’m taking notes…”

And when she said that sometimes she and Peter weren’t in sync…honey, it’s not that you’re not in sync. It’s that he’s TOO in sync with you in some things…like being into men…

And I’m beginning to love Mary. “We never KNEW any gay people before…but I like 'em!” BWAH! Love it!

Me too. There should be more people on reality TV who actually enjoy expanding their horizons, rather than wanting to use what they already know to win the game. She and David remind me of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes quote: “It’s not the destination but the journey that counts.” Which is what the Race is supposed to be about anyway, right?

Absolutely. I have to admit that I’ve kind of liked David & Mary since the first ep, not least because I KNOW people just like them: married at 16/17, have never been outside their state, sometimes never been outside their county, but hearts of gold and absolutely fascinated by the things they’ve never experienced before.

Plus, they’re good for unintentional comedy. Like when they whisper all conspiratorially that they’ve never been around any gay people, but they love them. That might be the second best moment in the history of ever (after only the Broken Ox Incident), and it’s definitely the most endearing thing I’ve seen on TV in quite a long time.

BTW - Mary & David are from Kentucky. And I’m loving them. They’re my new favorite team.

Good episode. A lot of shuffling of position mid leg.

Again, be wary of those Eastern European autos. They’ll get you every time. At least every team had someone who could drive stick.

Our first real use of ferns. Just how did Lyn & Karlyn find an American to help them in the middle of Mongolia?

I wonder if Peter’s yak talked to Colin’s ox?

I want one of those bovines. They’ve got attitude. Killer Mongolian cows…

Did anyone else bust out laughing when Phil was talking to Team Ironleg and said something about being on the second leg of the race?
