The Amazing Race 22 April "Bollywood Travolta"

A few observations (and we needed someplace to put the Taxi Assessment tomorrow morning):

For the first time in ages, the team that was shown in the previews having a tough time of it, had a tough time of it. I sensed some shenanigans, though. Bopper was telling Mark it was okay to quit if he was really in distress, then after Mark was changed and ready to leave, Bopper was the one telling him to give it another go. Did someone tell them that Phil was not coming to save them, and to soldier on to the finish?

As opposed to most people who threaten to quit, Mark did seem to be in a bad way. I’m kinda torn. On the one hand, how hard could it be? On the other, he was a hell of a trooper to keep trying like he did. I’m curious how far behind they’ll be at the start of the next leg.

I’ve always suspected that on the do-this-dance-until-the-judge-is-satisfied tasks that the judge gets more lenient as the attempts go on. I saw Mark miss a few steps on the last (successful) attempt that would have not passed muster on previous ones.

Similarly, the cricket bowler who was facing Rachel was definitely taking it easier on her than the one bowling to Art & J.J.

Did anybody else catch a few notes of Take Me Out to the Ball Game on sitar during the cricket?

I’m wondering how Vanessa & Ralph got to the travel agent last, but found a flight that got in a few minutes earlier. Risky move, being the only team on a particular flight. (They wouldn’t have known that, of course, unless the travel agents told them what flight everyone else was on.)

Did everyone else have that commercial for the cell phone with the skydiver and playing Laurie Anderson’s O Superman?

When the dance instructor guy was telling Mark that Mark’s a real man, just give it one more try and we’re done, I’m pretty sure he was saying just do it once more and we’ll guaranteed pass you through no matter what you do.

I thought so, too. And then I thought, “This had better not be an elimination round.”

I thought the instructor was pretty easy on Big Brother Rachel, too, and I thought I’d scream if that guy commented once more on how men can’t dance as well as women. Which brings mr to the comment that really surprised me. (I don’t know names, even after all this time.) the guy who mentioned his wife/girlfriend could dance because she’s got a little Puerto Rican in her. I didn’t expect that.

Yay, Kentucky is still around, I like them, although they made it more on strength of attitude in this episode than physical ability – Bad knee and vomiting and suchlike aren’t favoring them. I wonder how much of the dancing problems were caused by an electrolyte balance issue from yakking on the bus however many times?

Also, usual gang of idiots are usual gang of idiots.

That said, is it just me being overly sensitive or was everyone being particularly sexist in their comments this time around? Dancing is so much easier for women, gots to have a chick on your team for tasks like this, waugh cricket is HARD for girls, boys are so good at sports, etc etc etc… It kinda grated on me.

Of course, I AM kinda helping a young niece through some body issue problems at the same time, so maybe it’s just me. {shrug}

I got called away for the last 5 or 6 minutes of the show and so didn’t watch the ending, but didn’t Mark & Bopper announce they were quitting the Race?

(what I am asking is are they still in it somehow?)

Mark went back to the changing tent and took off his Colorful Native Garb. Not sure how long he was there, but it seemed to give him a chance to rest and cool down a bit. Next we see the choreographer and Bopper urging him to suit up again and give it another try. I think it was his 14th attempt; didn’t look that much better than the preceding 13, but the director said it was good enough. There was much rejoicing. Saw a quick clip of Bopper driving an auto rickshaw, then they arrived at the Amazing Mat. Amazing Phil gave them the “you are the last team to arrive” bit, and they talked about how they’d always stick by each other, etc. Then Phil said it was non-elimination.

Which makes three non-elimination legs this season. Unless they’ve changed the rules, from now on, the ax falls.

Yes, preceded by the “Charge” also played by organists at ballgames. Not to mention “Ride of the Valkyries” while the Army helicopter pilot drove a motor-rickshaw. :stuck_out_tongue: The person picking music was in full snarky form this episode.

Especially since half of the people on the stage were male (or at least, I could tell they were men - did they all look like women to the contestants?)
A lot of the contestants really rubbed me the wrong way in this episode.

I was raised a feminist, so it does grate on me anytime someone starts spouting “universal truths” about “chicks and dudes.”

What about when it’s a chick touting the dancing skills of chicks over dudes?

It was BB Rachel, but still.

I know – I was like, “Where did that come from?” Given Border Patrol’s idiocy of late, I’m not entirely surprised by their commentary. But the others? WTF?!?

That sequence of Mark & Bopper completing the final tasks and talking about their kids hewed so closely to the stereotypical TAR Exeunt Montage that I was instantly suspicious that this was a non-elimination leg. Phil’s pause after telling Mark & Bopper they were in last place pretty much confirmed it.

Taxi Assessment:

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Misa & Maiya and Dave & Cherie and Elliot & Andrew and Kerri & Stacy and Joey & Danny and Nary & Jamie - Already eliminated.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
Mark & Bopper (down from “Rapido!”) - It’s getting near the end of the race, but Mark & Bopper have to deal with Mark’s bum leg and Bopper’s heat exhaustion and completing an extra task and starting with what looks like a pretty substantial time deficit. It could have been far worse, as the director obviously gave Bopper extra points for trying; if he hadn’t, the additional penalty for not completing the task would almost certainly screw them next week. As it is, Mark & Bopper really need a bunching point and/or an enormous screwup from another team and/or some U-Turn drama to survive next week. With only four other teams in the race and the likelyhood that they’ll be in the same place next week (avoiding ant transportation bunches), I think their chances are slim.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Brendon & Rachel (holding steady) - Brendon & Rachel are back in the top three, and pretty easily despite some manufacured drama from Rachel. Still, that manufactured drama is distracting, and probably exhausting even when it’s commonplace in one’s life. On the other hand, Brendon & Rachel have a pretty good shot at making the final three: Mark & Bopper will likely be eliminated next week, and Brendon & Rachel have beaten Vanessa & Ralph in seven of the nine legs. I’m keeping Brendon & Rachel ranked here, though, because I just don’t think it’s likely that they’ll win it all, even if they do get into the final three.

"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Vanessa & Ralph (holding steady) - Vanessa & Ralph land on the mat in fourth place and just after Art & J.J. This team has been remarkably consistent over the last four episodes in finishing one step out of last place and no better. I know the point of the first eleven legs is only “do not come in last,” so coming in second-to-last technically fulfills that requirement, but I really can’t see Vanessa & Ralph stepping up their game enough to seriously challenge Art & J.J. and Dave & Rachel in the last episode.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
no one right now

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
Art & J.J. (holding steady) - It’s amusing to see even Mark & Bopper, who Art & J.J. apparently don’t have any beef with, explicitly point out that Art & J.J. are being big whiny babies. Their placement on this leg was perhaps unduly influenced by a difficult Roadblock, but they’re not looking so dominant as they were four or five episodes ago, when they led the rest of the teams on every task for almost three entire episodes straight. Art & J.J. still look like they should easily wind up in the final three, and there all they have to do is beat the other teams at the very last task.
Dave & Rachel (up from “Passing”) - Dave & Rachel easily cruise to their fifth first-place finish on the race after a nearly flawless leg. More tellingly, they’ve finished ahead of Art & J.J., the only serious competition, for four straight legs. It also seems like Dave has been been less of a dick recently, and although that might be a result of their good performance rather than a cause, it still helps to be focused on inter-eam competition rather than intra-team bickering.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty obvious they were giving Mark a free pass on the last try. Although, really, I’m OK with that: the length of time a task takes should be inversely proportional to one’s skill and perserverance. Tasks that could take an infinite amount of time are broken. It already took Mark three times as long as anyone else to complete the Roadblock; that seems like a sufficient penalty for his lack of skill. Some sort of sliding scale, where it’s easier to pass on later attempts, seems like a good solution to make the task reasonable.

Yup; my wife picked that up right away.

Thanks for posting that. I had to walk the dogs so I missed the ending. Kentucky’s been grating on me so I was hoping that they would be gone. I just don’t wanna hear about their dramas anymore.

When he was saying in the TukTuk something like “See! Always listen to your husband!” I thought a bit of his old dick was sticking out. Wait, that doesn’t sound right at all, but you know what I mean.

Yeah!!! Listen to your husband, and succeed!

Way to listen to your husband!

If I tries to pull that sort of line on my lovely and long-suffering Wife, there would have been a horrible TukTuk-related incident, and I would need to finish the Race with a three-wheeled vehicle stuck in my ass.

Oh India, destroyer of Racers. How I love watching you cripple teams.

My god–Border Patrol are being LESS mature than Big Brother? Geez guys, you’re acting like teenage girls where Major Dad wrote their names in a slam-book. Get over yourselves. Good fuck. I give every team one immature melt-down. They had theirs last week. I’m over them. (Gotta say, I liked their interaction with each other)

Bopper and Mark? Sorry, the “Bhut we need muney sew baad” storyline isn’t working. This isn’t “Queen for a Day” and sob-stories just fill me with contempt. If your daughter (?) is so damned sick, you shoulda stayed home and fill out forms to get a grant/charity to help her out )as well as, y’know, being there for her, not disappearing for two or three months to traipse around the world. Shut UP already. Also? You’re not going to die from heatstroke if you just take some breaks and cool down/cool off. Sobbing about how you’re gonna die just makes you look like a freakin’ sissy. Also, Bopper’s voice is to my nerves, like a grater is to cheese.

Also, Amazing Editors? You made it through like 8 seasons without ever showing anyone actually puking. I’m really sick of seeing Mark throwing up and actually seeing the vomit. Way to stay classy Amazing Editors. Earn those Emmys.

Rachel has gotta be retarded (literally retarded…) “OOh! They’re all gittery and so pretty and stuff!” And her tantrum was embarrassing. (“I’m a gurl. It’s haaard to not be all emotionals n stuff”)

Good ep though. Very little inter-team drama, no “ballast” challenges. The dancing one was fun to watch (except for constant the idiotic comments from Art(?) about “Guys don’t dance”…except for Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, etc, etc, etc.) and the roadblock had two visually interesting tasks too. I’d have tried Cricket first.

Also, a billion kudos to the Amazing Music People for their Indian rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. That was freakin’ hysterical.

By the way, another example of the wimpifying of the race (not one that I object to, necessarily) is that in the earlier races (pre S12-ish), if you wanted water, you better damned well buy it. Then some Mommy/son team had Mommy pass out, etc and from then on, you see tons of water for racers that’s race-provided. How’d the first 12-ish season’s racers manage?

ETA: I dunno–to me the “Listen to your husband and succeed” thing sounded like a family in-joke the way they were playing it.

No, I got the same exact vibe.

I didn’t see it this way. Actually, right after they said don’t let Rachel beat you, the bowler threw a couple of easy ones to the guy. I noticed that they threw a couple of hard ones to Rachel. I thought that the cricket task would have been easier as usually the sports ones tend to me, but I saw a couple of balls that would have gone over get caught.

I’m torn about Mark and Bopper, he did take a hell of a long time but everyone else got through it. I did see some of the other dancers make mistakes that seem to have gotten past the ‘director’ though so I’m not that worried that Mark got a bit of a pass too.

Rachel (of Dave & Rachel) looked great doing her dance- smiling, having fun and not missing a beat. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. On the other hand, Dave deserves an elbow to the nose.
