The Amazing Race 26 [2/25] - Great Way to Start a Relationship

The losing team seemed like they could not give a shit about winning the race at all. In fact, it was almost as if they intended to lose. Missing a train while taking a selfie on the platform right in front of it?

They were laughing all the way to the mat while everyone else was sweating it out.

Strange behavior for a team on a race.

Also, if there is even a small chance that you’d get selected to compete for a million dollars, why wouldn’t you try to get into some sort of decent shape? Team Truck Stop/Roller Derby can barely walk on their own.

Doctor/Nurse are due for a huge implosion. Previews hint at it next week, so it probably won’t happen then.

Who thought it was a good idea to have the second episode two days after the premiere? I debated creating a new thread for this episode, but this one is still on the front page.

I was half-expecting the puzzle box to contain a banana. Trying to solve a puzzle while taiko are drumming in the background could have been rather frustrating, but still no evidence of any meltdowns.

#TeamTuskegee seemed to have quite the lackadaisical attitude to the race. Why wouldn’t you verify the train’s departure time before pausing for an interview? If they hadn’t been Philiminated this episode, they would have been soon enough.

Sleeping in old office cubicles? What was that all about? I guess they didn’t have to sleep long.

I laughed when the two were taking selfies and missed the train. How lame. It’s nice to smile and laugh and be laid back, but obviously not too laid back.

Why were people gagging over the noodles? Were they really spicey or something? I didn’t get that. I’m going to barf! Why? It wasn’t even that much. Easiest food task ever.

The two boy band guys are my favorite already. They seem pretty down to earth, and their relationship seems solid. I hope they make it fairly far in the game. I could see them making a ditzy mistake at some point though.

I don’t know what’s worse, the selfies or the lovey dovey match making crap. This season doesn’t feel right. Maybe they’re trying too many new things. I’m not sure I like the extra mat cheesiness with Phil, either.

Episode 2 already? Missed it. Thanks for the heads-up. Off to a torrent site.

Some on another site pointed out that in Japan, homeless people have started renting cubicals at internet cafes and spending the night there. In some places, the cafes have expanded with mini laundromats and showers.

I don’t know that’s where the show was going with that but it’s a pretty odd thing to include and then not really discuss (although - how could they discuss it? It’s not that kind of show … so why do it in the first place? I don’t know.)

Here’s a Bloomburg article about the phenomenon.

I’m kind of surprised that there is no team yet that I find myself actively rooting against. But it’s still early in the race…

While team Tuskegee was taking the selfie on the platform, I actually said “Why don’t you wait until you’re on the train?” Then had a good laugh when the train pulled out.

Ugh. Making Phil leer and say, “Any romance yet?”, “In love yet?”, nudge nudge wink wink, is the worst idea they have ever come up with. Are the ratings slipping to the point where they felt like they had to get down in the gutter with other reality shows?

Yeah, I was saying to Dwight while we were watching this on Friday that this may be the first season where Phil has sounds creepy. Not good. The “romance” thing adds an uncomfortable edge to the show. I don’t like it.

Since it looks like there’s not as much excitement about this season I’ll just bump this thread.

I don’t know all the team names, but that nurse needs to stop saying she was right, yeah, the doctor screwed up, but didn’t bitch about it and finished. She would not drop it.

Team New Kid seem to be taking the mistake well as well. Lucky they got a non-elimination leg.

According to wiki, they’ve only had one Roadblock out of three shows.

All I can say is the Doc has great self-control.

And it was really nice of the newly met gay couple to give their couple prize to the newly engaged couple.

OTOH, what is wrong with this season? It just seems ‘off’ somehow.

And what’s with the weird accommodations thing? Staying in some sort of office building, multiple couples in a room? Did they honestly thing this would somehow spice things up for the couples OR the viewers?

Or are things so dire they’re doing it to save money?

My friend suggested last night that the weird sleeping arrangements are to test the blind daters under pressure, also to set up a possible partner swap later in the season. I hope it’s the former and not the latter, because that would take the creepy level of the season off the charts.

I wonder how much the show asked the blind date contestants about their preferences for a potential mate, because the gay couple seem to be woefully mismatched while most of the hetero couples are a bit better. I note there’s an interracial couple, and that could’ve been quite a landmine if they didn’t know that they were both okay with that.

Last night was just not a good episode. The editing has changed this season, even from the last. The bunching at the ending was strange; how did all of those teams finish with the dance and get to the mat one right after another when only two teams (seemingly) could do the dance at one time? They also never gave us a good idea of how far behind #TeamNewKids was from the other teams, it seemed like maybe just an hour or so, but with all the bunching, it could’ve been much worse.

I also really dislike that they sent teams to a kathooey show bar and never explained anything about that culture and made audiences think it was just a drag show, when it’s not. That, and the reflexive “look at me I’m a man” comments from a couple of the male racers felt really off and oddly insensitive of a show that tries to explain the cultural features that are shown.

I almost started a thread on this episode. Then I decided, “Nah” because, really, things are just too off to make any comment of note.

I want to say what’s missing is competitive spirit. The blind date angle tends to bring in too much love/peace/understanding when it’s a RACE. Well, except for the nurse (Hayley, I think? Gah, STFU you’re lucky your date didn’t duct tape your mouth). Everyone else seems to be happy-go-lucky-let’s-have-fun. Heck, as much as I like Team New Kid, even they seemed only slightly aware they were hours behind the others.

There’s nothing wrong with let’s-have-fun, mind you. I just find it disquieting when the overall attitude overshadows the actual reason why you’re there.

Annoying nurse was annoying, but I didn’t hear Dr Douchebag admit his mistake and apologize. I didn’t hear him admit to leading the team in the wrong direction last week, either.

Except for the one picture at the Pit Stop with all the teams, I don’t think there were any selfies in this episode. I hope this trend continues, but they’ve given the teams selfie sticks, which doesn’t bode well for selfie-free viewing.

The truckers pulled out a surprise win. Just how far ahead were they? They were able to do the dance routine by themselves multiple times.

Something unusual must have happened to the New Kids team that caused the producers to give the other teams a night off to allow them to catch up. Then a non-elim.

Blond nurse can STFU.

Did someone say “lake enema?” I laughed.

That surprised me. They seemed to be so far ahead that first they were able to do the dance routine by themselves a number of times and I think I remember the guy saying no one else was there so they were allowed to practice up on the stage, which must have helped. Also, they were alone at the mat, and not still there when the second place and subsequent teams all started showing up. They must have just rocked their Detour.

It felt like the night off was designed to foster the “we have the night to party!” reaction that it got – going along with the dating theme. They wanted the couples to have time to socialize, and I won’t be surprised if we see that happen again.

I figured the producers added in a night off because they analyzed the flights between the two legs and found a high probability that they’d have teams arriving many hours apart.

I wasn’t keeping too close of a watch of times, but I think first flight to New Kids difference was around 14 hours, maybe more. (flights only, not the whole leg) Anyone get a good look?

The young gay couple amused me when they said they weren’t attracted to each other at all. I think in an earlier ep they commented about it was like looking in a mirror (or something like that.)

I’m finding it hard, so far, to care positively or negatively about any team. Blonde ER nurse was annoying, but he doesn’t seem to ready to admit failings. They’ll probably end up the lone TrueLove blind date couple of the season.
.

Yeah, because the Amazing Editors removed all of Doctor guy’s remarks in order to drum up some manufactured drama. Apparently, show editing has yet again triumphed if we’re all rushing to call him a douchebag now.

And I thought the editing was designed to make her look like a nagging harpy, going on and on while he suffered her continual approbation in stoic silence. But really, he’s not much of a talker, he’s just really good at microexpressions that telegraph his disdain, and that started when they were in the car on the way to the airport to begin leg one.
