Loews Hotel has canceled a Josh Hawley “family friendly” (in this time of pandemic) fundraiser in Orlando in February after it became publicized on Twitter and posters there contacted Loews asking them if they supported insurrectionists,
While people are arguing whether Trump was abetting the coup attempt at his 6 January speech or from the election, I’m really surprised that we’ve forgotten the occupation of the Michigan state house by armed militia about mid-year. From memory Trump was conspicuously silent at the time. Is my impression correct? If so I’d see it as tacitly condoning such similar actions in the future, further fostered by his ‘Stand by’ comments in the election debate.
The coup attempt should not be constructed as a last-minute poorly thought-out attempt by upset loons who misinterpreted a ranting Trump to reverse the election result on their own initiative. It’s an action that was well within the range of behaviours already carried out by his supporters that he was willing to tolerate and did not call out. There was no surprise that this could happen again, and Trump continued to egg on the idea of rising dissent from his supporters to undermine any push-back from elected officials regardless of context.
If its suppresses democratic process like a fascist duck and asserts power through threat of violence like a fascist duck …
He will receive a lot of help from Republicans, unwittingly. Red states are all now being governed by Republicans from the county level up. Which means over the next couple of years residents of these states will see taxes go up, services cut, civil services jobs gone to privatization, public education funding shifted to private schools. It’ll take a while, but at some point Trumpers will realize Republicans aren’t actually on the side of the working man. Hard to imagine they will turn back to Democrats, but they may be ready to remove Republicans. Maybe a third party will arise with Trump at the center.
It’ll be interesting to see if the rise of some actual socialist democrats, or Democratic Socialists, in red states peels off some of the anti-elitist Republicans. As noted earlier this year,
Populist parties in the US have sometimes been an unpredictable mix of right-wing and left-wing causes. I wonder where that might go now.
No they won’t. When all these things happen, they’ll blame “liberals and Democrats”. It does not matter to them who actually caused it. The important thing is to blame someone else.
To be nitpicky, the media typically refers to notorious people by their full names so that it’s easier to tell them apart from others who may share their first and last names. And it’s super important to make sure they do this now due to the world-wide ass smacking people get as soon as they get to be notorious.
All of the other Wesley Beelers in the world breathe a sigh of relief.
Sounds like “crazy shooter bastard” is a bit of an overstatement…
" A federal law enforcement official said that the man, Wesley A. Beeler, 31, worked as a contractor, and that his credential was issued by the Park Police, but was not recognized by the police officer. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the arrest. Mr. Beeler had no known extremist ties, the official said.
“It was an honest mistake,” Mr. Beeler told The Washington Post after being charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and released on Saturday afternoon. He said he had been working a security job in Washington, was running late to work, and had forgotten that his firearm was in his truck.
“I pulled up to a checkpoint after getting lost in D.C. because I’m a country boy,” he told The Post. “I showed them the inauguration badge that was given to me.”
(I still deduct responsibility points for forgetting the weapon was in the truck. Can’t do that.)
And so it is Sunday the 17th; IIRC, there is supposed to be protests at all 50 State capitals today, leading up to the “Million Militia March” on Washington come the 20th. We’ll see how many actually show up and if they try storming their capitals; my guess it that it will be a damn fizzle, except maybe for states (Like Idaho/Oregon) that have large numbers of assorted nuts and a relatively small police force.
