The American Coup: 11.9.2020 -

My Wifes family are Trump supporters. Talking to my Wife’s sister, she admitted to voting for Trump again, but she hates what he is doing and has done.

Ok then.

It’ll be the “stolen election.” And unquestioning adherence to the myth of the stolen election will be the litmus test for all GOP politicians and conservative operators for the next four years.

Trump will no doubt be doing countless interviews, countless rallies, a book deal. He’ll be collecting so many grievances his collection will rival the Louvre in its magnitude.

Oh, you are exactly correct! This describes a lot of people that I know. They don’t care for Trump, but realize that some of the people he is allied with are doing everything they can to put an end to legalized abortion.

Has your SIL offered why she voted for Trump if she disapproves of so much of what he’s done? Is it simply “Biden / all Democrats would worse on policy”?

I believe you misspelled “forty” there near the end. Or certainly twenty.

The only thing that finally dethroned Saint Ronnie was Trump. Conservatives love them some very slow change and worshipping outmoded ideas, even (especially?) the discredited ones.

Can someone please wake me up from this nightmare? It just keeps going on!

But conservative House Republicans argue that next week doesn’t mark the end of Trump’s desperate efforts to overturn the election results, which he has failed to do through scores of fruitless lawsuits and brazen efforts to pressure state and local leaders to subvert the will of voters and appoint new slates of electors to the Electoral College. They said that Congress should engage in a full-throated debate over the results in key states because of their allegations of fraud, which have yet to be borne out in court.

I don’t think any of this has a chance in hell of happening, but playing what if. What if the GOP was actually able to pull off putting Trump back in the White House for a second term? I mean, I’m a pretty lackadaisical kinda guy, but even I would be in the streets at that point. How would that play out?

How would it play out if civilians protested against an overt Trump coup that got pulled off without overriding protest from other government elements?

With military support for the Trump presidency. Which he wouldn’t hesitate for one second to use.

I wouldn’t count on that. Even if some of the upper echelon support him, it will by no means be unilateral. You would definitely have massive desertions amongst the rank-and-file and a good chunk of the officers.

Time-Life Books will have to put a new series: “Civil War 2.0.”

You’ve got the guy in the riot who throws the first cinder block through the window at Best Buy, and then you have the crowd of people who – though they would never do that – since the glass is broken anyway …

All of that martial law leading is not in his skillset at all. Trump is not a world builder, never has been.

Trump’s MO has been consistent. Keep fame level up, up, up. Use fame level to attract business partners. Find some way to welch on whatever deal you make with the partners.

It works, I will grant that. But it has limited applicability. Trump’s not going to do any of the work towards a coup, not going to build any of the relationships or coalitions. He’ll also get jealous and fire anyone who actually does work for him, unless that person decides to throw the rest of their career (and life) away and become a sniveling toady.

It would be messy but would not work out well for them, for sure. Not well for lots of other people, too, although prolly not as much of a mess.

I have to admit that the info I get from my SIL is from my Wife. I do not talk politics to them (that would be the last conversation we ever had). In any case, I believe it’s single issue voter stuff, as my Wife’s family (but not my wife) are very religious. They know nothing more than FOX ‘news’ and think that while Trump might be ‘misguided’ he’s a wonderful person.

And I only talk to them a few times a year. Not a time for politics.

I also suspect racism and bigotry, but that would be defended by saying “I’m not a racist, I hired a black guy once!”

It’s a little difficult. Especially for my Wife. Some though in my Wife’s family are coming around. My BIL took down his Trump/Pence banner and has said that Biden is OK. Got a nephew that always hated Trump, and a niece that is having second thoughts.

Baby steps. But not sure that’s gonna do it.

What they will get is the same number of abortions, with the added bonus of more deaths of young women. If they actually wanted fewer abortions, they’d put energy into contraception initiatives, so that there would be fewer unwanted pregnancies. But fewer abortions is not really a priority for them. Punishing women (“other” women) is the priority.

Ted Cruz has submitted an amicus brief to SCOTUS urging them to take the PA case and says he will make the oral argument himself. The suit involves Mike Kelly claiming that no-excuse absentee voting is unconstitutional

Interestingly, lawyer Marc Elias tweeted that this case is not a petition to grant cert but is a request for an emergency injunction, which would not even involve an oral argument.

Yeah, that’s right! But it is hard to get a religious conservative to see that perspective clearly.

Until they become unwantedly pregnant that is.

I’m generally not one for bumper sticker philosophy, but this pretty well summarizes it for me:

Against Abortion? Don’t have one.

The conservative mind doesn’t particularly care about ameliorating problems. It cares about punishing the wicked. The fact that wickedness exists is acceptable, and even preferable, because then you get to punish somebody. Reducing the instances of wickedness isn’t necessary or desired.

I’m sure that sadistic monsters exist, but I think that the more common line of thinking is more like: Abortion is bad, therefore it must be forbidden, because it’s bad. Failing to do so would be condoning it!

They choose not to recognize that legalizing it would result in less abortions for approximately the same reason you don’t spend much time pondering how much money you’d save if you murdered your creditors - the notion is abhorrent, regardless of the outcome. The end doesn’t justify the means.

And while a huge percentage of people who say such things are just mouthing it, I’m sure a nontrivial percentage actually believe it without hypocrisy!

Ted Cruz is almost as much of an attention whore as Trump. He just wants to be involved in this shit and get his hideous mug on camera.
