the American dollar bill...when and if

Okay…

They gave Franklin, Grant, Jackson, Hamilton, and Lincoln all a makeover, but when will they redo the one dollar bill? (golden Sacagawea dollar coins don’t count!) One dollar bills get used / abused most. It seems goofy if they wouldn’t update them too.

Reaching back into the cobweb-filled recesses of my brain, I find a memory of a news story that stated that the single would not be revamped because it’s generally not worth the time and effort of counterfeiters to make them.

I understand that the main focus of the currency overhaul, was to thwart counterfeiting. However, I have little doubt that it was also an asthetic appeal change, as well. Call me slightly anal-retentive, but I would like to see the bills all “match” now. It just seems slack to not include the one.

It’s not “cost effective”.

It would cost too much and wouldn’t be enough of a profit for a counterfitter to make a copy of a 1.

Besides, doncha think the government has a little more to worry 'bout right now than, “Oh gee, our bills don’t match!”

Who would make fake 1 dillar bills? I would make tens or twenties and nothing higher. Larger bills would be checked in some stores.

Yes, Java, I agree. This is just something I have had on my mind for a long time, though. I just now got around to commenting on it.

Strangely enough, in the UK, there have been quite a lot of forged £1 coins around, both last summer & this (they look oddly grubby, sort of tarnished and darker than the regular pound coins. They sometimes have slight errors on the edges). I know our pound is worth more than $1, but it still seems odd that they’re making enough for it to be worth it.

Oh & our £5, £10s & £20s (& presumably higher, but people very, very rarely use fifties) all get checked in quite a few stores, so that wouldn’t help either, Mudshark. More often if there is a known problem with fake fives, or fake tens circulating in a particular area.

Frankly, I think the proper answer is to kill the damn things and go with the dollar coin.

There’s also all those vending machines that would have to be retooled to accept the new bill.

Not to mention all those wallets.
