The Americans Season 3

Newseason starts today.Frank Langella is playing a role. Looking forward to it.

I’m stoked! Easily one of the better shows on TV!

One of the few not on HBO shows that I enjoy.

Season 2 was excellent. I can’t wait to see where they go from here.

The AV Club’s review of season 3 is quite positive (warning: article contains mild spoilers about the first episode and general direction of the season).

Unreasonably pleased to find that it is back! Now, where to find it…

Just to add: I’ve never been so quickly gripped by a TV show than by the opening sequence of Season One, Episode One of this. Using Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk was just really bloody brilliant.

Those 13 episodes are going to go by quickly. :frowning:

On the positive side: FX seems to be doing a decent job of promoting tonight’s Season 3 premiere. The higher the ratings, the more likely it is that we’ll get a fourth season.

I can’t wait. So what spoiler policy are we using? Boxed spoilers or open spoilers after each airing?

Frank Langella is one of the better actors too. He has played a huge variety of roles. I remember two fims he was in. In one he played the lead and he was a vampire. The other was Dave (1993) in whicj Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver starred and he had a large supporting role. Dave (1993) - IMDb

I loved Dave. It was kind of sweet and sappy but if you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend it to anyone. I guess I’m just a sucker for sweet and sappy.

Boxed spoilers please? I haven’t seen it yet and had to go out tonight so I’m recording it.

Pretty Please?

That opening sequence was fantastic, wasn’t it? I know that both Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell share equally in making this a fabulous show. But I was just knocked out by Keri Russell. I would love to meet her character back in the mid 80s, even though I know the odds are very slim I will ever do that. (j/k)

FX may be doing a good job publicizing this season, but take a look at this picture they are using to publicize the show (actually I don’t know who is responsible for this picture).

Frusen Glädjé - It’s Swedish. Hah!

And Jason Alexander in the Hershey Kisses commercial.

What was the dish Gabriel (Langella’s character) made for the Jennings. It looks a lot like Lasagna - and no known Russian dish to me. But why would Philip say ‘Something else we’ve missed’? (Maybe he meant they missed Gabriel’s own recipe)

The first episode did not disappoint. I love this show. Looking forward to a great thread here too! First, that which need not be spoilered:

Awesome wigs.

Poor Martha.

Dammit, Stan.

Now:
Seeing Gaad beaten up was surprisingly satisfying. I like him but he needed a punch.

I’m disappointed we didn’t see Nina but I am sure she will have a big role to play somehow. I will suspend my disbelief to the rafters to have her back in, but I am sure it will be good. I want her to get back to America.

There is a new woman at the Rezidentura who we are told to be careful of. Exhibiting only the first subtle signs of frumpiness. Is she investigating Oleg and Arkady Ivanovich? Is she related to the 2nd generation illegals program? Will Arkady finally get some action?

Oleg is on a fuse and I can see him doing something that ends up getting him killed or sent back in disgrace. I don’t think Nina was in love with Stan (at least not after she found out about Vlad), but I could see Stan using that worry to goad him into something. I really like where they are going with Oleg, compared to how he started.

ISI Bureaucrat was ice-cold and Philip was a weird mix of excited/freaked out in that whole scene. He looked happier there than Clark did with Martha. He will cause problems in the future, surely, as Afghanistan becomes a bigger deal.

I’m up in the air on how Paige will react. Elizabeth needs Paige to know who she is, you can tell, and especially after her own mother has passed. I don’t think the creators thought this far ahead, but I remember Elizabeth saying much earlier, “Paige is fragile somehow.” Henry is still floating. He got a line though.

I’d like to see some non-Russian Soviets make a bigger appearance. I think it was AK84 who wanted Philip to be non-Russian in an earlier thread, I also thought that was a good idea.

Stan is such a sad-sack. I was surprised he didn’t think of Elizabeth’s ‘grocery’ injury when they were talking about the woman who beat up Gaad. Isn’t he naturally suspicious of everyone? But Noah Emmerich is doing a great job.

Everyone is fraying and making mistakes. I wonder how the hit/extraction on that defector will go. Will Paige find out by accident?
I think it was the ice cream that was Swedish and the dish he was making was likely Russian. But I’m just guessing.

I thought the season opener was great. Very powerful. Many new issues raised. But I was half asleep when I watched it. I don’t remember half the events that nani discussed in his/her spoiler. But I better put this all in a spoiler too. Just to be safe.

What reason did he have to say “Poor Martha”? She got a gun and learned how to use it. I thought that gave her more power. Oh. You meant Annalise? She was the girl who was murdered. That should be a great new plot line too.

What a magnificent show!
His  and Martha is always, always poor Martha, haha. I really don’t get how Clark finds the time and how he is not caught out by Paige or Henry for not being home on those nights (how often does he actually see Martha anyway?). I saw people commenting on the AV Club website about the possible symbolism of Martha having to take off her glasses to shoot better, that was interesting.

Poor, poor Annalise, for real. She was always on the crazier side of hopeless romantic. How is Philip going to cover up the death of the wife of whichever important government guy she was married to? I wonder if he was counting on the last meeting he set up between them to go down like that.
Hey nani. I feel like I’m undercover. Everything I have to say is hidden in a spoiler box.

It’s easy to find problems in the plot of this show. Phillip, Clark and whatever other name he used when he was with Analise would certainly have trouble maintaining a family life. That is for sure.

The one item I found very unrealistic in the season opener came in the fight Elizabeth had with the two FBI agents. When one of them appeared to be slamming her head onto the car, you can see that she is clearly using her hands when he appears to be slamming her head. I guess one could say that anyone would do that to protect their head from landing the blow. Still, it looked like the stunt person who coached Keri Russell didn’t do as good a job as they should.

But if that is a flaw, it is a very minor flaw in an otherwise superb show.

I have missed this show so much and I’m so happy it is back for the next 13 weeks.

I’ve been thinking for a while that the

death of Elizabeth’s mother would make an interesting plotline, so I’m glad the writers agree. Unfortunately I think it will only strengthen Elizabeth’s resolve to bring Paige into the fold.

Frank Langella is a wonderful addition to the show. His introduction did not feel awkward or forced at all.

I had to laugh at how comfortable Stan is at the Jennings’ house. Help yourself to anything in the fridge there, Stan!

There is no need for spoiler boxes. Just don’t read the thread if you haven’t seen the latest episode.

I didn’t realize that it was Gaad who got beat up until he showed up in the office. That was amusing.

Having Paige be the next generation spy will be interesting especially with Elizabeth being heartless and coldly evaluating her and Phillip having a heart.

I vehemently disagree with Elizabeth about Paige, but I don’t think it’s fair to say she doesn’t have a heart. She loves Paige just as much as Philip and believes this is the best way to avoid losing her. All parents want their kids to be like them to some degree. It is all Elizabeth knows.
