Max…sounds like you are saying they may never reveal they are KGB and doing espionage…do I have that correct? If so, that would be an interesting way to go. I could see that happening. The unwitting accomplice to the KGB.
Another vote for her demise. I think the Martha story line has reached its sell-by date, and this is a way to get rid of it. If she can’t provide any inside info, she’s useless to the Soviets. He could probably just dump her, but probably won’t want to take the chance on her ratting him out.
I remember something about last season where she complained about lax security and how they have confidential documents laying all over the place. She complained to the guy who pointed out to her that this is now no longer the case. This makes her less useful to Phillip and when she is totally useless to Philip she is most likely done for. There is no way that Philip can just disappear from her. She will start to ask questions and provide a description.
The whole “Let’s adopt a child!” thing will probably be the last nail in her coffin. She’s going to go ahead and do it behind Philip’s back no matter what, and that’ll make her nothing but a liability.
Whatever happened to the promotion she wanted last season? Presumably “Clark” managed to elude a Feeb background check?
It certainly was very strange how they had that one scene where the mail robot came rolling down the hall and before you knew it, they just cut to a commercial without ever having much of any discussion or explanation.
Seems to me that something very strange will surely be upcoming for Martha. I would love to see P find a need to off her for some reason. She sure does give P a lot of reasons to get rid of her. The child is just one small reason.
Besides having many reasons for offing her, she also seems to present many opportunities - such as a loaded .38 revolver. It just seems like Martha is begging to be gone.
I wonder if the actor who plays Martha has some other show or business opportunity coming up for which she has to scoot. But, whatever is happening, all I can say is …
“Scoot Martha … Scoot!!”
I still think Philip should encourage Martha to pursue a foster child placement, preferably not a very young child (as she is currently thinking) but rather a teenager. As I wrote earlier in this thread, it would make sense for Philip to manipulate a vulnerable, disaffected teenager to become one of the next generation of spies, in the hope of taking the heat off Paige. Of course, in order to do so he would have to play the long game. And perhaps he fears that Elizabeth will reel Paige in more quickly and easily than he could with a foster child.
The latest episode was quite good IMO. I liked the way Philip used religion to put off Kimberly’s advances. It was an interesting contrast between Paige’s faith and Philip’s own principles, but it was more than a simple opposition of true faith vs. feigned belief. Philip does believe in what he is doing, despite his ambivalence. In fact, the whole episode centered around faith and commitment, genuine belief or use of faith as a smokescreen to hide an ulterior motive and/or a different belief, whether that faith resides in Christianity, EST, the civil rights movement, anti-apartheid activism, or the KGB. Also the echo of Paige’s baptism in the later scene when Kimmy takes a bath (and wants Philip to join her) was provocative and intriguing.
Re: Matthew Rhys’ accent. I think he does a fairly good job of maintaining a plausible American accent, and at least he avoids the usual pitfalls of British actors who tend to assume a bizarre hybrid with random elements of Brooklyn and Mississippi dialects. But Rhys’ accent definitely slips at times.
Does anyone know anything about the history of EST? Was it still popular in the 1980s? It strikes me as such a quintessentially 70s phenomenon. A quick Google search shows that EST was still around until 1984, but I would have thought that it was already on its last legs by 1982, when Sandra and Stan are presumably attending the seminars.
Yeah, est was over by the end of '84 when it was modified into Landmark Forum which still exists today.
I’m especially impressed by Rhys’s accent every time I hear him use his real one. It’s not just an accent but a whole different personality, like he’s a jolly little elven creature or something.
No, Elizabeth swooped in, as Clark’s sister, and convinced her not to turn in the application.
In 1982, I met this lady and I tried to pursue a relationship with her (actually, I was only interested in trying to have sex with her). But her only interest in me was in trying to get me to come to her EST meetings. I always figured that she would get a slice of the money I paid to EST, but apparently, that is not true. It was very easy for me to tell the difference between a lady who was interested in me for myself and one who was interested in me for me to come to her stupid meetings. IMHO, it was all just “oh so tragic”.
My guess is that - like Scientology - the people at the top of the EST pyramid are so fundamentally greeedy, they want every penny for themselves.
Please understand I am just assuming things here and I am usually dead wrong when I do that. But I do have some actual experience with Scientology although I have virtually none with EST.
Someone here (in a different thread) told me that both orgs were created by some of the same people. I probably shouldn’t speak about them because I am deeply prejudiced against them (I hate them). I had some very dear friends when I was in my early 20s and when I was in my mid 30s, I bumped into them again and was absolutely horrified to see they had become Scientology gouls. It was like their wonderful personalities had disappeared and their entire personalities were devoted to the service of the org. They lived and breathed and sleeped all about Scientology and nothing they did was for themselves.
Scientology was all they could talk about and all they could do with their lives. Their entire lives seemed to be devoted to Scientology and it seemed like every spare minute they had was devoted to Scientology (which they called “The Church” and just that made me sick). They tried to get me to join the church and become a robot just like them but I was having none of that. I was horrified at the thought. After all, who were these crazy people who ran that church?
I thought it was just extremely creepy and I was horrified to see how they had become so engrossed in that organization. The loss of my dear friends was enough to make me cry. I was so sad to see them go. It was as if some monstrosity had taken over their lives and their wonderful personalities had just disappeared. I was so very sad for them. I wanted to do anything I could to terminate the Scientology organization.
There are those who might say that Phillip and Elizabeth are members of the biggest cult ever. (Communism.)
Martha is not only more gullible than we imagine; she’s more gullible than we *can *imagine! :smack:
If you believe the Steam Age is the pinnacle of human development, you’re dumb enough to believe anything!
Someone refresh my memory; where Martha’s parents at her wedding with “Clark”? I remember his “sister” and “mother” being there.
Yeah, they were there…weren’t they?
Yes, they were. And they were every bit as gullible as she is.
Showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields On How Far To Take Philip’s Minor Flirtation
No spoilers. Minor Flirtation? Ahh, a pun.
[QUOTE=Variety]
What did you find out? Kimberly is 15 on the show …
JF: The character is 15. The actress is 47.
JW: Yeah, the actress is 106, so just relax. [Editor’s note: In case you’re wondering, Julia Garner actually turned 21 this year.]

In the article, one of the show runners talks about “re-breaking”.
What does that mean? I can’t find it in any source.
I think the smartest thing to do would be to start like that and see how it goes… maybe Paige is an amazing agent and they start pushing her slowly towards their politics, maybe not.
I’m confused. Weren’t they both in this episode?
Actually, I think that Sulu and Chekov might have been in one episode together anyway. I was just making an idle comment on how this (and some other shows with larger casts) seem to juggle their characters. No biggie.
So what do people think the deal is with Henry and that underwear pic of Mrs. B? He did say, “It’s not even mine.” Now, of course a typical kid would say that but a typical kid doesn’t have Russian spies for parents.
