The Americans Season 3

… And so does Elizabeth. Philip told her after he came home.

I’d watch what she does in a case like this.

That’s it exactly. It should have been Clark showing up cleaning up the mess or at least someone from his department. When it’s a team trying to figure out what the fuck is going on in the first place, she knows that she has been duped. The smart move is to try and explain to Gaad that she’s been had but I don’t think that she’ll live long enough to do that. Interesting twist.

This show incorporates music so well. That final sequence set to “The Chain” was freakin’ perfect. And I love Philip’s Sid Vicious/Joey Ramone disguise. Matthew Rhys said he loved it so much that he wore it home the night they shot the scene.

All this time I’ve been thinking that Philip’s son was a manufactured KGB manipulation, and that Philip thought so too. But Philip really does seem to believe it. I can’t even begin to guess where this is going.

Poor Martha. She’s an easy target for jokes, but I really do feel for her now that her entire world is unraveling.

His son’s life at risk in Afghanistan makes the conflict a lot more real. This was truly the USSR’s Viet Nam and was a complete cluster fuck. Those kids were dying for nothing.

Definitely. Except Martha could be a step ahead of Philip, since he had no reaction when she lied about leaving her purse at the office. Philip might not think Martha is as smart as she has had to become.

Well to me it is exactly as Martha thought it would be, a picture of the two of them on the stand, wine waiting to be opened, everything in its place. I think this is where Philip comes to become Clark…and that’s why she’s in so much pain.

Bread girl I think was part of the hit team, the tip off was the accent in her voice.

You don’t think she doesn’t know anything? No, she doesn’t know who he is, but she either knows or strongly thinks he’s BSing her. She now knows where he “lives”, even if it’s a safe house she’s been there and can take others back there. I would be surprised if she doesn’t have at least a couple of pictures of them together, maybe even of his “sister.”

We know, or so the two agents said, the bug was Russian, I’m not sure if Martha knows that or not. If she tells anyone about Clark’s place and they find it’s some sort of burner place they might start connecting the dots.

That’s of course assuming that Martha doesn’t buy it before she does anything. Even if she dies people are going to start to wonder what she was in to. This could start the ball rolling on making Philip and Elizabeth’s lives a nightmare.

I like to imagine the writers read this board about speculation on Gaad being KBG. A funny little nod to conspiracy theories.

If Stan gets into Clark’s apartment and sees the picture of Martha with Clark that will be some revelation. Martha even has ‘wedding’ pictures, so true if Martha bites it, those pictures are worth a thousand words. Right now, Martha is being saved by I think Philip’s assessment of her as dupe, since he and Elizabeth joked about Martha’s obsession with adopting a child, and it appears that is the motivation for her being “off” That probably won’t last very long since he’ll be wanting that transmitter.

The instant that Martha shows up at that apartment either alone or with some US govt person, the apartment will go cold - instantly. No one will ever go back there. Nothing will ever happen there. It will be as if the owner went on a European trip and died in Europe with no friends or family.

While it isn’t relevant to the Americans, this being the SD we just can’t leave any Star Trek nits unpicked:

Chekov and Sulu were in lots of episodes together.

Turnabout Intruder

unknown

A leetle blood, Chekov! (Deadly Years)

Amok Time

Now, if you were asking if anyone had ever seen James Franciscus, James Farentino and Tony Franciosa together, now then you might be on to something!

Martha sure didn’t give her attempt to get some info about Clark and his apartment much thought.

On the one hand, she needed to do whatever she wanted to try quickly. Before any enemy forces had a chance to clean things up. But on the other hand, she needed to have given her response a lot more thought than she did. She needed to try to fool Clark into thinking that everything was find. But she failed badly at that. She sent out alarm signals and Clark now knows that something is defintiely wrong.

This dance she’s doing is very interesting. Martha has no experience doing this - zero. Clark has all the experience of many hundreds of people doing this over a course of hundreds of years. He can easily get information and help that will make this struggle look like an elephant versus a flea.

I hope I explained that well. It’s like an inexperienced thug who goes to rob a gas station. This is the first time he has tried this. But the police, collectively, have hundreds of years of experience dealing with thugs and the lone gunman has no idea what he is facing. He also has no chance.

Martha, trying to handle this on her own is so completely outmatched. If this was real, she would have zero chance - probablly even much less than zero.

However, pictures remain despite the apartment being vacated. Clark or KGB would have to get to Martha and get her pictures before she tips off the FBI. It all depends on who moves the quickest. It’s a chess game right now.

I finally get what the “new guy” is doing there, and why Stan was so uneasy about him. He was a plant from the beginning, sent in to find out what the fuck is going on after so many failed attempts to nail enemy agents. This explains his offhand remark about “no more secret material on the cart” and how he twigged so quickly to the transmitter hidden in Gaad’s pen.

If I were running things, this would be a great opportunity to try and frame Gaad, but I think Martha is going to buckle first. (On the other hand, it could be one way to save her ass and use her again in the future.)

If they whack Martha, they’ll have to ensure that all incriminating evidence is removed from both apartments. The same applies if they just hang her out to dry.

The safe house is no problem; they can send someone to clean it out at a moment’s notice. Martha’s place is a different matter, and her parents no doubt have photos of the couple as well. This will make things very sticky indeed…

They had their own van, didn’t they? :dubious:

That’s right! I forgot about the pictures.

This will be one of the most exciting plot lines the show has ever had.

If Martha fails to approach her boss and tell him everything, she will wind up in jail or worse. We saw what happened to Nina. Martha only had one or two opportunities to come clean. If she fails to do that the next time she sees her boss, it’s curtains for her.

But Clark should know something is wrong and he should get some help from his people and they should know their best next move.

Both the CIA and KGB have gone through this sort of thing so many times before, I would figure they must have a big book containing all the outcomes and all their best moves based on many, many years of their experiences.

Seems to me that in a situation like this, it is always possible that something unexpected could happen. Someone could die and that would open up a whole new possibility. But as it stands, Martha just has no chance of escape from disaster. Not unless some kind of miracle happens. And that is the exciting thing about this show. The show runners can always reach into their bag of tricks and pull out a miracle. I just wonder if that is what they will do now.

Sorry. Double post.

Let me see if I can explain this a bit better then, it helps to think about ONLY what Martha knows. She knows she’s been helping someone spy on her boss. She knows that the bug has been found. She’s smart enough to destroy the recorder and not get rid of it right away. She knew to lie to Clark about her purse so he couldn’t see it.

As for the safe house, to me, it wouldn’t matter if it was clean and not a speck of dust was left there, somewhere there’s paperwork on who owned it, who rented it. Unless there’s a whole lot of safe houses right there the neighbors will know something.

They might not catch Clark, but start pulling on one string and lots of other things start to unravel. Martha herself may or may not be totally screwed, if she leaves any kind of hint at work even if she’s dead someone can take what she left. There’s no way anyone can erase every thing about Clark and Marta, photos, neighbors, even the marriage license has little pieces that can be put together.

Just imagine if Stan saw a photo of Clark and his “sister”, they may not look like Philip and Elizabeth, but they will look close, and with them pouring over the photos all day he might see it.
