The Americans Season 3

Just_Asking_Questions,

Yes. I think that most anyone here would have to agree that you definitely nailed that one. On top of that, you were the only one who did that. So … congratulations to you!

But … you don’t make hardly any posts in this thread and if you can call some other issues as well as you called that one, then I for one would love to hear any other calls you would care to make and I bet some other people would like to hear that as well.

So … how about telling us what you think will happen with Paige and her grandmother in upcoming episodes.

Please understand that I am not trying - not in the least - to be sarcarstic or make fun of you. I really would seriously like to hear your opinions on upcoming events. I don’t expect you to be correct. That is a very difficult thing to do. But many people in this thread seem to be somewhat perplexed of this Granny issue. I mean will it be a Fake Grannie or a Real Grannie? I’m guessing that many people here would really love to hear a fresh perspective and … I think that means you!

Heh Heh … Seriously, I’d love to hear any fresh pespective. So many of the current ones have just kind of lost steam. So, tell us … what do you think?

So what do people thing is going to happen with “Northrop lady” and her husband?

Hello to the Straight Dope Americans community.

Over at the Dope’s regular Better Call Saul comment threads, we are having a little debate. It would be perhaps too complex for your small minds to assimilate, but the gist of it is, how do you manage to cope with the amount of drool that you typically discharge? Do you wear bibs, or do you have some sort of funnel/tube arrangement? I was thinking the other day about the water shortage in the western part of the country, and decided it could be easily solved by shipping a bunch of Americans watchers to the affected region. Then again, we don’t want to poison those good people.

I suppose what I mean is, it would be nice to think you could give some net benefit to society to counterbalance the moral rot that we, watchers of Better Call Saul, the greatest show on modern TV, observe in your depleted tribe, when we bother to think of you at all.

I once accidentally caught an episode of your overpraised, overblown obsession. Seems to be something about a couple of commies who fall all over each other to see who can screw the most top secret dope out of various civilians, and the clueless FBI guy with bad skin who’s too dumb to notice that the spies are living next door. I bet that last part gets you hot, am I right - COMRADE?

Anyway, please don’t kill the messenger! I guess we Saul fans could issue a challenge of some sort, but we do have better uses of our time than shooting fish in a barrel. Enjoy your tragic little existence, but do have some consideration for your betters and try to mop up afterwards.

Your friend,
Vashbul

Nothing good. Fwiw, I narrowed it down to house fire, car wreck or joint overdose.

Huh, I thought Elizabeth would just pay them for the intel. Why kill the golden goose?

Yeah, if people are willing to sell out for money, well, that’s what spies want. Makes their job a lot easier.

As long as you 1) keep distance, so you can’t get swept up if they blow it and get arrested, 2) watch out for stings, and 3) let the analysts decide if your source is really the CIA feeding you fake or otherwise incorrect intel.

As I read it - based on the conversation in this epi, Maurice thinks it’s about spying okay, but industrial spying.

He’s even decided E doesn’t have enough money to help him out of his problems (he wants a piece, a percentage).
He has no sense of what he’s involved with and will blow the whistle on what he thinks is unthreatening industrial espionage.

Saying all that more succienntly; Maurice’s angle is blackmail - he’s not minded to take money to help with the mortgage arrears.

I would guess you are most certainly correct about that - and if you are, we will likely get to see a most gruesome murder. That is what usually happens to people who try to blackmail others when they don’t have any experience at doing that.

Besides, Maurice has been a thoroughly despicable character and I can’t imagine anyone who would not enjoy seeing him suffer an even more gruesome death than the man who got mashed under that car. It may not be an important plot point, but I would enjoy seeing Maurice suffer a death like that South African Tire Necklace or even worse! Nice call UTJ!

But there’s nothing to blackmail. There’s no real person behind the one Maurice thinks he’s dealing with. E can just disappear. She’s not in any danger.

But Maurice is, as noted.

Maurice is a crazy-assd loose cannon. No knowing what he might think is the smart move.

Maybe E will try to still work Lisa - she’s obv. valuable. But how to do that and explain Maurice’s demise …

You must make your fellow ardent fans so proud to have you as a colleague.

Well, everyone has different opinions and I don’t expect anyone to be proud of me.

But I can understand some people being unhappy or taking exception with my wanting to see Maurice suffer.

But if you consider how much Maurice has made Lisa suffer and how hostile he has been towards Elizabeth, it might be understandable why some people wouldn’t mind seeing him suffer in return.

You’re entitled to your opinion, no matter how dumb it is, but your previous post said you couldn’t imagine anyone not wanting to see him suffer a horrible death, and I thought you should be aware that there are indeed people who don’t think that being a jerk, even if that impression is based on seeing him in rough circumstances for a full five minutes, should be a capital crime — let alone wanting a death more gruesome than being burned alive for him.

Now you say that you understand that, so I guess my work here is done.

Maurice clearly doesn’t know who he’s dealing with. That will prove to be really bad for him.

Nah, it’ll be Hans, quick and easy with the Hollywood Silencer - but they won’t kill Lisa. Yet.

U.S.L.F. Rules! 532 beeps!

So I guess Maurice thinks E’s plan is to steal (industrial) information with Lisa’s help - plans, photos, tools, examples, whatever - and sell it to a market competitor. He wants part of the bounty, he thinks it’s really serious money and he wants a piece of it.

At least that’s where I think we’re at …

btw, yesterday was a huge day for my little blog - 160 people came by clicking 240 pages

It’s final now, updated with several suggestions from Charlie. Inc. crystalising the moment when Paige started to buy into the family business. For the last time this week (actually, quite a few Dopers have stopped by - thank you!):
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
Excellent, now to get on with life for a few days …

UTJ:

Read your blog, and I have to admit, I am confused.

One one hand you say Paige is “buying into the family business”, yet after you explain the Granny connection, you opine that you don’t think it will work on Paige, who will see it’s all another ruse.

No offense, but you seem to contradict yourself. One on hand, you seem to be saying Paige is well on her way to buying in. Yet she will also have to deal with another lie perpetrated by her parents when they bring in the fake Granny.

How is she going to continue to “buy in” if your prediction is true and Paige has to deal with another monumental lie? The two concepts do not seem to square.

Hi twuest, first off, thanks for reading it - hope it was okay!

I do think, in the very last scene, we see empathy for her mother and that that is the start of a journey for Paige.

Yep, I do discuss a fake granny and conclude it won’t work, it’s going to have to be the real deal. We have no clue where that will happen (the Soviet Union, a third country or somewhere else in the US), but I do conclude it now must happen:

If it’s still unclear please get back to me as I will need to look at that again …

UTJ:

I kind of see where you are going…I agree they are going to use the Grandmother issue to get to Paige. It just seemed to me there was a bit of a contradiction. If I can use a mathematical analogy to what you wrote:

A: Paige may start to waiver + B. They lie to Paige about Granny =C Paige turns.

That equation doesn’t seem to add up…at least not to me, which is why I’ve said the show will lose some of what has made it such a good show so far
if Paige turns and it becomes the KGB version of “Family Ties”.
